Alfa Romeo Tonale: all the info on the first Alfa Romeo hybrid SUV

It is limited to two models, the Giulia sedan and the Stelvio SUV, the compact SUV Alfa Romeo Tonale has been expected for several years now. It marks a break with previous models Alfa Romeo for two reasons: it will not use the Giorgio platform and it will be the first Alfa Romeo hybrid.

While it was to be marketed in 2021, following the integration of the Alfa Romeo brand into the Stellantis Group and the change of the management team, the Alfa Romeo Tonale will finally be presented on February 8, 2022 at an event called "La Metamorfosi and marketed in the summer of 2022.

Technical data

As explained in the introduction, we know that the Alfa Romeo Tonale is a compact SUVand therefore of the C segment. The dimensions will be 4.53 m long, 1.84 m wide and 1.6 m high. The trunk capacity is about 500 liters. The weight is still unknown.

On the models presented, the Alfa Romeo Tonale is equipped with Pirelli P ZERO in the 235/40R20 96V XL size. The Pirelli P ZERO has been chosen as original equipment for the various versions of the Tonale: hybrid, Q4 plug-in hybrid and diesel.

For driving behaviorThe platform used for the Tonale is the SUSW, taken from the Jeep Compass and Jeep Commander. The front and rear suspensions are of the McPherson type. The basic platform has been improved, however, under the direction of Domenico Bagnasco (who worked on the Alfa Romeo 4C and the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA), in order to give the Tonale a sporty behavior.

The Tonale's steering has also been tuned for performance with a powerful electric motor in the steering column that offers a 13.6:1 ratio. For comparison, the reduction ratio is 15.9:1 on the Jeep Compass. The weight distribution, front/rear, has also been worked on.

On board the Tonale, for infotainment, we find the U-Connect 5 system, with the Alexa voice command service, compatible with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, already seen on the latest Maserati Ghibli, Levante, Quattroporte or even the electric Fiat 500. That's a good point because it performs well. Harman will still be a partner for premium audio. In total two screens of 10.25 inches and 12.3 inches are available at the driver's level and at the central level.

Driving aids are also included. From level 2, there will be 360° camerablind spot detection, lane departure detection, autonomous emergency braking, etc.

The driving screen is totally digital but still allows to display needle meters

The Tonale's headlights are full led and matrix led, a first for Alfa Romeo. The Matrix LED headlight concept consumes very little power and the light emitted by these headlights is rather white and intense.

Regarding the quality of assembly and materials, the new director of the brand, Jean-Philippe Imparato (former CEO of Peugeot), promises top-of-the-line finishes.

Alfa Romeo Tonale engines

The Alfa Romeo Tonale will be the first electrified Alfa Romeo of the brand. According to the latest information, here are the engines that will be offered for order:

  • 1.5L MHEV DCT7 130 hp gasoline (light hybrid technology)
  • 1.5L MHEV DCT7 160 hp gasoline (light hybrid technology)
  • 1.3 T4 PHEV AT6 275 hp gasoline (plug-in hybrid technology, 15.5 kWh battery)

Only the 275 hp engine is offered in four-wheel drive. The other two engines are tractions.

The 1.5L MHEV hybrid engine is new to Stellantis but has already been seen in Jeep and probably other models in the group soon. The difference in power between 130 hp and 160 hp of the 1.5L MHEV is obtained thanks to a variable geometry turbo. In the 130 hp version of the Tonale, the 0 to 100 km/h would be accomplished in 9.6 sec and the top speed would be 195 km/h.

The 1.3L PHEV engine with 275 hp is interesting because already known in 240 hp version at Jeep but the power has been increased here thanks to a battery of 15.5 kWh, for a sportier behavior, while having a range between 60 and 80 km in all electric. The 0 to 100 km/h with this motorization, would be accomplished in 6.2 sec.

The 2.0L 255 hp gasoline and 1.6 Multijet DCT7 130 hp diesel engines will be offered in countries where the regulations concerning pollution tax are compatible, probably in the USA.

Alfa Romeo Tonale's direct competitors The compact SUV is the 2nd best segment in Europe with 536,000 sales in 2021.

This will win back former Alfa Romeo customers, whose Giulia and Stelvio prices were unaffordable for some.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Quadrifoglio

The Alfa Romeo Tonale Quadrifoglio is not on the agenda for the moment. The brand's priority objective is to make volume before making sporty models.

If the Alfa Romeo Tonale Quadrifoglio is to be released one day, it must be compatible with the pollution standards and be able to offer a true sporty behavior.

The two hypotheses retained are either a 2.0L GME PHEV engine of 380 hp, already existing at Jeep and compatible with the Tonale platform, or a 100 % electric (but in this case, not before 2024).

Alfa Romeo Tonale Insurance

The insurance of the Alfa Romeo Tonale will probably cost between 1000 € and 1500 € / year in all risk, depending of course on your bonus/malus, etc. To have an accurate price, make a simulation ofAlfa Romeo insurance.

Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019 (and yes already), the Alfa Romeo Tonale concept, driven by Klaus Busse, marks the next step in Alfa Romeo design. Modern but with tributes to the past and in particular to the SZ and Brera.

  1. They no longer have the right to make mistakes. A successful Tonale that is coherent with the market will relaunch the brand and make us forget the Marchionne era, but if it is not at the level of the competitors it will start to smell really bad for Alfa. And it's not even close...
However, I hope it will be the Alfa of the revival (who said "another one?" lol)

  2. 41 years ago, it was my first car ... used.

An ALFA ROMEO ... Alfasud 1350 blue Alfa.

So, for the last atmosphere, it would be nice, provided that they ensure!

  3. It all looks really nice, especially with the proposed engines. Being still a bit allergic to the SUV phenomenon, I prefer to wait for the replacement of the Giulietta sedan and hope it won't be too long!

  4. I just saw the presentation videos. From my point of view there is no wow effect, the concept having been seen and seen again.
On the other hand, the final car is very close to the concept, which is very good news, especially with a very faithful rear end. The front end is less tapered but this is not surprising, as the production version has to comply with safety standards that require a "big nose".
The design of the lights is great, especially at the rear, and the interior is totally in the Alfa tradition.
Still in my opinion, the colors chosen for these videos (a dark green and a blue close to the Misano blue of the Giulia) do not do justice to the car's line, see with other colors.
Anyway I can't wait to see it "in real life" and in motion!

  5. For years I was BMW . I wanted to change for the Stelvio 2.2l 210CV I have now 48000km
And I am delighted with the vehicle in every way.
    A treat to swallow KM.
I'm thinking of changing in 2023 to either the Tonale or the
    Stelvio again.

  6. The engines seem to me more convincing than those of the 3008, so much so that I wonder if Stelantis should not use this platform for the next generation...!
As a convinced Alfist (this will be my sixth one), I'm going to rush to buy the 160hp 48V hybrid version.

  7. A suv, what a shame 🥴. I've been an Alfaist for 45 years and I'm devastated to see such a great brand of sporty and stylish cars go under. I expect something else from Alfa Romeo, that the brand finds its splendor of other, it lacks pep and originali all that, am deeply disappointed ☹️

    • To each his own, my dear sir, I love SUVs, the Stelvio is too big for me, but the Tonale is simply magnificent, a compact SUV with a typical Alfa interior design, which is not found in any of its competitors...

  8. I hope that the tonal is up to the competition (quality of materials, precision of assembly, latest technological innovations, price measurement, etc.). If this is the case, it will be my next car without any doubt.

  9. Is a test drive scheduled? I have the impression from the first feedbacks that the gearbox setting is more adapted to a quiet driving (hunting for emissions) than to something sportive. Maybe better for a Tipo hybrid?
