Alfa Romeo: Italian car production halved in 2024

2024 promises to be more difficult than expected for Alfa Romeowith production halved year-on-year. Following the publication of Fiat production and MaseratiNow it's time to take a look at the biscione brand. Recent data confirm that production of Alfa Romeo's iconic models, the Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale, fell significantly in 2024.

Significant declines, starting with Cassino

The Cassino plant, which mainly produces the Giulia and Stelvio (and also the Maserati Grecale, which has been removed from our figures), experienced a 38 % drop in Alfa Romeo production, from 31,558 units in 2023 to just 19,600 units in 2024. Stelvios continue to dominate production at Cassino with 72 % of volumes, while Giulias still account for 28 % of production. This decline is hardly surprising for cars launched in 2015 and 2016, with new versions expected in 2025 and 2026.

The Tonale, a new model already on the decline

Pomigliano, the plant where the Tonale SUV has been manufactured since 2022, has alarming figures. In 2024, production of this model falls from 55 %from 82,300 units in 2023 to just 36,980 units this year. This decline is all the more striking given that the Tonale represents an important part of Alfa Romeo's revival strategy in the C-SUV segment, and these results are a slap in the face for the brand's growth ambitions.

A 2024 that could have been much worse without Junior

These figures confirm our forecasts for Q3 2024then from November 2024This is despite the introduction of the new Alfa Romeo Junior SUV. This model, launched in mid-2024 and produced at Tychy in Poland, saves the year 2024 from an even more dramatic fall. Without Junior, Alfa Romeo would have recorded an even greater drop in production, reaching -50 %.. While production figures for the B-SUV are not yet known, Junior is there to lighten the bill where it already accounts for 50 % of sales in France and Italybut the signs remain worrying. If Junior doesn't post record sales in 2025, it will be a difficult year for Alfa Romeo.

Sales targets: mission impossible?

With production results in freefall, it is highly likely thatAlfa Romeo to miss sales target of 80,000-90,000 vehicles by 2024. According to our estimates, the brand could even record a drop from the 70,000 units sold in 2023based on data from the five main European countries. Pending a new Stelvio to be unveiled in 2025, Alfa Romeo must focus its efforts on the Tonale and Junior, two SUVs that can do volume.

  1. Hallo an alle Alfa Fans.

  2. The Tonale and Junior lack engines that could generate enthusiasm. We'll say they're aimed at a new clientele, but those who have Alfa cars can't be convinced (except by the Junior Veloce, which seems very good in terms of feel, but with the usual brakes for switching to electric).
Stelvio and Giulia are old, but offer a superior driving experience to the competition. It remains to be seen what engines the future Giulia and Stelvio will offer?

  3. Thank you Carlos Tavares, very questionable choices and I want to remain polite. Imposed SUVs, I'm really not convinced that this represents the wish of a true Alfist. Then you get back what a technical incompetent has sown. Courage, Italian friends, you've got to get back on track, and you can do it!

  4. Will they learn any lessons or just say that it's going down for everyone?
With slightly larger-displacement engines, I'm sure the Tonale would sell better and, of course, get a bit more publicity.

  5. Hello and best wishes.
True aficionados like me expect better than trucks when buying a new vehicle.
    Bernard (giulietta owner)

  6. As for Maserati: Tavarian price hike.

Coupled with a lack of offerings, with nothing on the most popular segments in Europe (Junior doesn't really count).

  7. Much in love with the brand, particularly Giulia Veloce. But the parts after sale are so hugely expensive, we're not able to get close to this brand. The dealership here still holding same position in very expensive parts. So many people are running away because for this reason and secondly the scarce to find parts when needed to change during malfunction of the vehicle. SADLY 😥.

  8. Let's look in the face of the truth - Alfa Romeo Tonale is ugly. Only people who want to support the brand at any cost bought that car in first year. Their numbers are dwindling. Did Alfa managers expect anything else? Seriously?

  10. The future looks bleak for both Alfa and Maserati. Despite new Suv-type products (they're the only thing that sells anymore) with pretty cool looks, but prices that are far too high. I agree that Maserati is still an exceptional brand, and its prices are perhaps more deserving (except for the mc20, which is overpriced compared with its supposed competitors), but I don't understand Alfa any more... And at the same time, we don't understand anything about the car market: square things with big wheels and, above all, screens. Alfa has always been a brand that favored driving pleasure with a sporty touch and a unique atmosphere, despite a few shortcomings (I drive an Alfa GT every day). But today, if it's only to drive a re-bodied peugeot, I don't see the point, especially if it's become the premium brand of peugeot, which has already declared itself to be premium (just look at the prices). All that's left is the giulia, but it's starting to look a bit dated, despite its good looks (after all, when you see the latest bmw models, you don't really want them). Maybe we should go back to cars with a real identity, lower prices and entry-level models that are a little bit spicy, and I think that aficionados will come back for more. Happy new year to all.

  12. Alfiste for over twenty years, 156, GT, 147, Mito, 159, Giulia Lusso, Stelvio ES, Giulia Estrema and Tonale PHEV Q4.
When I see how the customer is treated, I'm not surprised. What's more, there's no showroom and they want to go premium?
My life expectancy is not 200 years.
At the age of 60 (in a few months) I'll be leaving Alfa with regret.
My wife has gone to Mini since her Mito (in 2010, also very disappointed with the after-sales service). I'm thinking of doing the same with BMW, at least the customer is respected and not just a checkbook.

    • Many brands haven't understood that premium isn't just about the product: it's also about listening to the customer, satisfying him in difficult times and building loyalty. Premium also means investing heavily in equipment, motivating and empowering the sales network, and providing irreproachable after-sales service.

  13. In the USA, they're finally selling the Tonale as an entry-level model with a GME 2.0 268 hp engine at 35,000 euros. That's already taken care of a large part of the problem, and we'll have to take advantage of any restyling to offer new interior options, seats, doors and center console. The chassis isn't bad for a family SUV, but the driving position is more problematic for an Alfa, so I'm not sure it can be improved. The Q4 version is also far too expensive at 53,000 euros; it's the only one to meet CAFE standards in the long term. In my opinion, it could be accompanied by a pure full-hybrid drivetrain with a battery of a few kWh, so that it can almost always be driven electrically and have the necessary responsiveness for dynamic driving. Generally speaking, the brand needs to offer models that meet the requirements of the target clientele, by reducing weight, with a design that appeals to everyone (classic and not eccentric), and also by improving service. The roadmap is simple, but will the resources be allocated?

What's missing is a real range. A replacement for the Giulietta, or a small MiTo-style compact. Not to mention a coupé or cabriolet, niche products but oh-so-bearing bearers of Alfa tradition.
I'm going to keep my Giulia for a while yet, because while its replacement might be tempting, you'll probably have to sell a kidney to afford it (the Achilles heel of the current range). I'll be adding it to my very small collection, which already includes a GTV6, 147 GTA, a Sprint and a Spider.

  16. I have a Stelvio, my first Alfa, coming from Mercedes. It is a superb driving experience, yet despite this Alfa is heading to the failing all electric market. My advice: keep a mid sized Sport UV, a decent repmobile and produce a spider GT capable of handling the Stelvio/Splugen passes with style
