The electric Fiat 500, the Italian brand's flagship model, is going through a difficult period. After its initial success, it is now facing an alarming drop in sales and production, according to the latest information provided by the Italian trade union Fim Cisl. If we had already anticipated a drop in sales for 2024, the union confirms that the situation is even worse than expected, particularly at the Mirafiori plant in Turin.

Production in free fall

The Turin production hub, the nerve center of Fiat 500 electric car production, saw its volumes plummet impressively in 2024. Whereas 85,940 units were produced in 2023, the figure for this year is just 25,920 units, a reduction of 70 %. This drastic drop is directly reflected in sales forecasts for 2024, where the electric 500 is expected to struggling to exceed 30,000 registrations in Europea figure well below the 65,000 units forecast for 2023.

Of these 25,920 units, the 500 electric model, which accounts for 91 % of production at Mirafiori, with 23,670 units producedThe 500 BEV is therefore in a critical situation. This decline is all the more worrying given that the 500 BEV was launched as a flagship model for the electric transition of Fiatwith a seductive design and 100 % Italian production.

Forecasts for 2024: a drop of more than 50 %

Italy, the country of origin of the Fiat 500, remains particularly reluctant to adopt the all-electric version. Already in 2023, according to our figures, the electric 500 managed to register just 4,749 registrations in Italy, a paltry figure compared to the 14,793 registrations of the hybrid version that same year. This trend looks set to continue in 2024, with only 2,345 registrations for the electric 500 in this country.

Forecasts for 2024 are worrying, with an estimated drop in sales of over 50 % compared with the previous year. Our figures predict particularly weak results for the three main European markets: 17,306 registrations in France, 7,441 in Germany and just 2,345 in Italy.

Mirafiori plant at a standstill: production in crisis

Production at Mirafiori was regularly shut down in 2024 due to weak demand. Prospects for 2025 are hardly more optimistic. The Mirafiori plant will remain shut down until January 20, 2025, and a significant relaunch of production is planned. is not expected to take place before November 2025with the introduction of a new, more affordable Fiat 500 electric model and the arrival of the 500 thermal hybrid.

    • The 500th was launched in 2020, 1 year before Stellantis was born.
It's a pure Fca product and the crazy prices were decided by the management of the former Fca.

  1. But who at Stellantis imagined that everyone would be rushing out to buy an electric car?
The Fiat 500e may be an excellent city car that marks real progress over the previous generation, but it's too expensive for many, and there are still major obstacles to switching to electric.
If Stellantis insists on proposing only electric models for future Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Lancia and Abarth models, they'll be heading for disaster.

  2. The analysis of this fall seems clear enough:

    - Too high a price for a small city car (the 500 thermal was more expensive than another lambda city car, but still affordable): once the fashion effect has worn off, this price is harder to accept.
    - Greater competition: R5, Mini if you want to stick with neo-retro, but also Chinese cars if you want more affordable electrics. It's already 4 years old, so comparisons with the competition aren't in its favor!
    - Finally, the announcement of the update of the electric version and the arrival of the internal combustion version: it's not a good incentive to buy a model that's going to be radically modified.

Let's hope that this last point will bring a breath of fresh air, because this car is still very well designed and conceived! In the end, we can console ourselves with the fact that it held up better than the honda e, its main competitor at the time of its launch!

  3. Ohne Infrastruktur u. umweltfreundlichen Abbau in Europa, und Reichweite,über 1000km kann man die Batteriewagen vergessen!

  4. The Fiat 500e was due to be launched in the UK at c£20k in 2020. I looked at the possibility of leasing one. However it came out later that year at £27k.

Someone became very silly at FIAT. The car never recovered it's momentum.
