Maserati: 173 redundancies at Modena plant

When it's not the Mirafiori plant that produces electric 500s and other Maseratis, it's the Modena plant that's in the news. Maserati is faced with a delicate situation, marked by the announcement of 173 redundancies at its historic Modèn plante.

According to information relayed by ModenaToday, these job cuts, although presented under the aegis of voluntary incentive departures, cast a shadow of uncertainty over the future of the Trident brand in Modena. The majority of jobs affected, i.e. 130 out of 173, are occupied by engineers and designers, highlighting the potential impact on the company's research and development department, also known as Innovation Lab, inaugurated in 2015.

The decision has not failed to provoke reactions, particularly from Fiom Cgil, the union that did not sign the agreement concerning these departures. The union warns of the possible consequences of these redundancies, particularly with regard to the future of the research and development project, previously housed in the Innovation Lab at the Modena site, as well as the repercussions on the plant's production capacity.

However, Maserati reiterates its commitment to the Modena site, confirming the investments planned for the "Fuoriserie" workshop" its vehicle painting and customization business. The question remains, however: what range of vehicles will these activities cover, especially at a time when production of new models in Italy seems to be slowing down?

Modena's Fiom Cgil expresses its concern serious concerns about the future of Maserati in the region, calling for concrete industrial plans to guarantee development and job preservation. In addition, an agreement reached on April 3 reduced the number of planned redundancies, a victory underlined by other unions such as Fim Cisl Emilia Centrale and Uilm Uil Modena. The latter stress the importance of a recovery strategy and a solid industrial plan for Maserati's future.

Unions and institutions alike are looking forward to a meeting with Carlos Tavares, Managing Director of Stellantis, scheduled for mid-April at the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy. The aim? To obtain a national support plan for the automotive sector, with specific measures for Maserati.

The current situation at Maserati in Modena is a poignant reminder of the brand's precarious position. Maserati sales in 2023 were driven mainly by the new Grecale SUV, but also by the margins deteriorated sharply. As a reminder, the new models are not expected before 2027 for the new Levante SUV, and 2028 for the new Quattroporte sedan.

  1. At a time when luxury vehicles are selling like hotcakes, Carlos Tavares is sabotaging Maserati and Alfa with his incomprehensible industrial strategy.
Crappy 3-cylinder Puretec, and soon all-electric, quel cuore sportivo!
But it pays well for him to destroy everything, obviously.

  2. This is yet another example of Stellantis' misdeeds, the beginning of the Italian automotive industry's destitution, but other brands can rest assured that Stellantis will continue its destruction. Only shares count to fill Carlos Tavares' portfolio.

  3. Yet another illustration of the methods of the financiers in power: in order to present attractive profitability figures to shareholders, the Research and Development department is cut! Never mind in-house know-how, just copy Lambo and turn Maserati into an empty shell. Pity...

  4. It's obvious that Stellantis isn't going to keep design offices everywhere, and there's a risk that there'll be just one design center for the whole group, unfortunately 😭😡 just look at the Ypsilon, which comes out of Sochaux and not Turin!
I hope the Italian state will be a little firmer with those responsible.

  5. Mr. TAVARES' undermining of the Italian brands continues. Next month, I bet they'll announce a new model that will save the brand......an "ugly 408" rebadged with the Trident and powered by the "powerful and intoxicating" 1.2 PURETOC!!!!

The Maserati brothers must be turning in their graves.

But if Mr. TAVARES decides, we mustn't forget that he seems to be doing so with the assent of John ELKANN. The latter doesn't seem to be moving very much.

He may be the grandson of AGNELLI, but I don't think he has the Italian soul......he does, however, have the American dividend culture.

Italy is losing its automotive soul.....let's hope that Italian politicians and unions will be "persuasive" enough to put an end to this massacre of their cultures. Because, yes, Italian automobile design has always been a benchmark in the world......even Peugeot has had glorious models designed by Italians........Pinfarina, Bertone, etc....

    • Elkann gave the keys of the house to Scrooge (who sells cars as he would sell refrigerators), wouldn't he be the problem in the end?

  6. Without wishing to defend Stellantis' strategy for the Maserati and Alfa Romeo brands, it should be noted that they were already moribund before the advent of this group. While AR's situation has improved a little thanks to the Tonale, Maserati's is only getting worse, notably because of its overly elitist pricing policy (nothing below €90K), while the brand lacks the necessary credibility on a global level (quality and service, rapid depreciation) except with aficionados, whom they risk losing with the removal of V8 engines and the push towards electrics. I foresee the same negative evolution for AR with its strategy of the 100% electric on Giulia and Stelvio and the imposition of the Puretec engine on Milano. To be continued.

    • Credibility is built. You don't get it by firing engineers and technicians by the hundreds. Internal know-how will be lost, and the message to customers looking for exclusivity is catastrophic...

    • What's all the fuss about this guy?
Is this the site for anti-French trolls?

Gg ItalPassion, a good fascist site. The aim is to let people loose on France as responsible for all Italy's ills.

Without PSA, Maserati wouldn't have had a future. It would never have brought out the mc20.
If Maseratis don't sell, it's primarily because the brand doesn't appeal. It's too expensive for what it offers.
A few people buying it doesn't mean it's a good brand or a good product. What it does say is that its products are off the market. This brand is being pummelled by all the luxury brands because it doesn't represent luxury, but premium at luxury prices. The result has always been disastrous sales.

      • This message is appalling. The MC20 was entirely developed with Dallara for Alfa Romeo, PSA has no connection whatsoever with this model, and the flourishing economic health of the Franco-Chinese group is laughable. There's zero French investment in Italy, and all that's happening is a meeting at the Ministry of Enterprise (and Made in Italy, duh) to get the Italian state to subsidize the group again and again. As for "fascism", I don't even mention it...

        • I especially notice that some comments are censored while others apparently get through, too bad, I'll just read the articles from now on.

          • I don't see any of your comments censored except the one where you made Carlos Tavares look like a beggar. I didn't validate it because it adds nothing to the subject.

  7. We're seeing just about anything with Italian brands. Peugeot's stranglehold on Stellantis, which wants to sell its brands everywhere, could kill off the Italian brands. And then there's the forced switch to all-electric cars, even though there is some reluctance, and not everyone is suddenly going to dream of driving an electric car.

  8. Hello to you all.

I asked to buy a levantE or a gibbli
    new diesel engines.
I'm told MASERATI no longer makes diesel cars.
    Buy a Peugeot.
No way, I'll turn to another
    manufacturer.
    Mercedes, BMW, Jaguar. for example.
    MASERATI dealers are disgusted by
Mr. TAVARES who doesn't understand anything about
automotive industry. He's a financial gravedigger.
Even one day, it will sink Peugeot, Citroen, fiat!!!!
