What if the next Maserati Quattroporte isn't actually a sedan after all? As the Trident brand prepares to unveil its new strategic plan in December 2026, its CEO, Santo Ficili, has just made a particularly interesting revelation. In an interview with a British media outlet Auto Express, Maserati's CEO confirms that the next-generation Quattroporte could feature a completely new design, somewhere between a station wagon and a crossover. A statement that confirms the profound changes that have been announced for several months.
The Quattroporte will no longer be a traditional sedan
This is probably the most important piece of information in this interview. When asked about the future of the Quattroporte, Santo Ficili makes no secret of his intention to reinvent this iconic model. «The future of the Quattroporte, as I see it, isn’t a sedan. It could be something between a shooting brake and a crossover: a large, very low-slung car, to return to that segment.» A statement that marks a true break from the six generations of the Quattroporte that have been on the market since 1963.

Starting in January 2025, We had already mentioned the possibility that the next-generation Quattroporte might move away from its traditional silhouette in favor of a fastback body style. Santo Ficili’s comments now go even further. Maserati appears to be considering a vehicle that would be neither a true sedan nor a traditional SUV, but a new take on the classic Italian luxury car.
A stylistic revolution that has been in the works for several months
This revelation is no coincidence. Last March, Ralph Gilles, head of design at Stellantis, had already announced that future Maseratis will be «very futuristic». A few weeks later, Gilles Vidal, head of European design at Stellantis, explained that Maserati's current design cycle was now «over».
Santo Ficili's statements now offer the first concrete indication of this revolution. With a low, elongated body that is potentially more versatile, The next Quattroporte could become one of the most original models in Maserati's recent history.
A concept car to be unveiled in December 2026
But we may not have to wait several years to see the first models of this new generation. According to Auto Express, In December 2026, Maserati will unveil a concept car in Modena to showcase its future design language. It won't necessarily be a direct preview of the Quattroporte, but rather a design statement that will offer clues about future Quattroporte and Levante models.
Santo Ficili also outlined his vision for the lineup. Maserati should be built around two pillars: sports cars, including the GranTurismo, GranCabrio, and supercars; and large luxury cars, including the upcoming Levante and Quattroporte. In between, the Grecale would retain its role as a volume model.

Maserati Can't Afford to Make Any More Mistakes
This product campaign comes at a critical moment. According to data compiled by Italpassion, only 3,758 Maseratis were registered in the 13 markets surveyed between January and September 2026, representing a 38% decline from the third quarter. Antonio Filosa, CEO of Stellantis, recently acknowledged this: «We can no longer afford to make mistakes».
The next-generation Quattroporte could therefore symbolize much more than just a change in body style: an attempt to reinvent Maserati in order to win back customers who have gradually drifted away from the Trident. It remains to be seen whether this bold design will be enough to win over buyers. We’ll get some initial answers in December, in Modena.
