Maserati Grecale, all the info on the new SUV

It's been since 2016 that there has been any real novelty at Maserati ! There were the Ghibli and Levante with hybrid engines at the trident brand, but this was not enough to boost the order book which has been falling for several years in France. The brand is strongly impacted by the ecological malus. Will the Maserati Grecale reverse the trend?

The SUV Maserati Grecale is highly anticipated because it is a segment that sells well. In addition, the "baby Levante" has been announced since 2017... It was first supposed to be presented in 2020, then in November 2021 before being postponed to spring 2022. And here we are! Orders for the Maserati Grecale will open on March 22, 2022!

Technical data

The Maserati Grecale is technically a departure from the Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte. It is in fact based on the excellent Giorgio platformThis is the same as on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, improved and lengthened for the occasion. This is already the assurance of a very good driving behavior.

This "small" SUV is still 4.85 cm long (15 cm less than a Levante), 2.16 m wide and 1.67 m high. The weight would be of 1 870 kg. Indeed, the Grecale focuses on comfort and high-end materials. This is reflected on the scale.

Several driving modes will be offered: GT, Comfort, Sport, Corsa (Trofeo only) and Off-Road.

Regarding multimedia, we find the very good Uconnect system already present in the last Maserati Ghibli, Levante, Quattroporte and MC20. The audio system is a Sonus Faber.

Features are controlled from three screens: the large 12.3-inch center screen, another 8.8-inch screen for additional controls, and a third for rear seat passengers.

It is in direct competition with the Porsche Macan, Mercedes GLC 63 AMG and BMW X3.

The Maserati Grecale range

The range of the Maserati Grecale SUV is relatively simple: GT, Modena and Trofeo.

Maserati Grecale GT

It is the basic version of the Maserati Grecale but already very well equipped: 19″ wheels, electric leather seats, ...

Maserati Grecale Modena

The Modena version is similar to the GT version, a little sportier in terms of finishes and with a hybrid engine that offers 30 hp more.

Maserati Grecale Trofeo

As for its sisters, the Trofeo version is the most powerful, the sportiest. With the V6 derived from the MC20, the Grecale SUV announces a 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 sec and a Vmax of 285 km/h!

Maserati Grecale Folgore

The Maserati Grecale Folgore, to be unveiled next year, will be the 100 % electric version of the Italian SUV. It will feature an electric motor with 400V technology.

At its launch, the Maserati Grecale will be offered in 3 engines:

The 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged 300 hp engine is the same one that we already know at Alfa Romeo in the Giulia and Stelvio in 280 HP version. The 330 hp MHEV variant is the one already found in the Levante hybrid and the Ghibli hybrid. Note that the sound of the 4-cylinder has been reworked in the exhaust system compared to the Ghibli and Levante.

The 3.0L V6 twin-turbo engine "Nettuno inaugurated with the Maserati MC20. Available on the Trofeo version, it offers 530 hp.

A fully electric version (BEV) of the Grecale is well in the program but not before 2023just like its competitor the Macan.

We can legitimately ask the question of the ecological malus, in France on this model. Launching a sporty SUV of 300 hp, in light hybridization, almost 1.9 tons, the malus is important ... Porsche announced in 2021 a decline in sales of its Macan in particular because of the malus! Will the Grecale be a flop in France as soon as it is launched?

Why not offer a plug-in hybrid version (PHEV)? According to our information, the technical platform of the Grecale (shared with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio) would simply not be adapted to plug-in hybrids... too bad!

Prices of the Maserati Grecale

The Maserati Grecale prices are just below the Maserati Levante, and approach the Porsche Macan prices. Here are the official price list of the SUV Maserati Grecale :

• Maserati Grecale Modena 2.0L 4-cylinder hybrid 330 hp from €86,000
• Maserati Grecale Trofeo 3.0L V6 530 hp from € 115,400

With malus that gives a starting price of more than 90 000 €.

The first deliveries of the Maserati Grecale are estimated for the summer of 2022.
