The Lancia Ypsilon, the new jewel in the crown of premium Italian automobiles, will soon have a more affordable version. Up to now, the conversation around the new Ypsilon has focused on its top-of-the-range electric launch version, the Cassinapriced at around €40,000. This special series, already available to order, will capture a niche of enthusiasts with its promise of elegance and electric performance. However, a rumor from Italy announces a game-changing development that could boost volume.

In May, Lancia is set to unveil the full range of the new Ypsilon, including a internal combustion version with hybrid engine. The announced starting price for these new versions : approximately €24,000. This price would apply to the base configuration with a 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder internal combustion engine capable of developing up to 100 hp. This engine would be coupled to a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and a new 6-speed dual-clutch electric gearbox.

This makes the new Ypsilon not only more affordable, but almost as competitive as its technical cousins, the Peugeot 208 hybrid and Opel Corsa hybrid, whose prices start at €22,500 and €22,200 respectively.

The complete range of the new Ypsilon will be available to order from May, but in addition, in June, at the Mille Miglia event, Lancia will supply more information on the Ypsilon HF scheduled for 2025, as well as its competition schedule.

It remains to be seen whether this more affordable price will be a strategic turning point for Lancia, which is aiming to win back Europe with this new Ypsilon which, until this new model, was reserved for the Italian market. By way of comparison, the Opel Corsa's technical cousin will have 54,000 registrations in Germany, 40,000 in the UK and 19,600 in France by 2023, including 65 % electric versions in France.

  1. It's painful to see this PureTech engine again and again in all Stellantis cars, which no Italian car enthusiast will want.
What's more, the 100hp version can go as fast as a scooter.

  2. Criticism is easy.
First of all, it's version 3 of this engine, with 40% parts changed. It's a timing chain coupled to a gearbox with light hybridization, so it's very interesting in town. On the contrary, I find it interesting.

    • Closing your eyes is easy too.
Problems with vibrations, compressions, turbos...etc. The list of defects on this engine is so long that even today, the evolutions haven't brought much.

  3. Given the problematic and uninteresting PureTech engines offered on this Lancia, which will probably be on other Stellantis cars in the future, it's only the electric motors that will eventually be of interest.
I like this Lancia Ypsilon, the design is really good, and it's luxurious. I can't wait to see the future HF version.

  4. Personally, I think this Lancia's design is really superb. It's modern and has a (seemingly at least) luxurious interior. It knows how to distinguish itself from its cousins. We all agree that the real problem is the engines... With a 1.4 Multiair I'd have said yes straight away :') The teasers are really top-notch and exude Italian class. I hope it will be a hit with people who only care about looks and not too much about performance. It's still a mythical brand, and we've got to start from somewhere if we want to have Lancias as extraordinary as in the past. Let's give them a chance in the not-too-distant future. For those who want a modern Stratos, there's the MAT brand for that :p
