Stellantis officially confirms a new Alfa Romeo to revive the 147 / Giulietta

After several days of vagueness, speculation and even the beginnings of a controversy surrounding the communication from Stellantis, Alfa Romeo has finally clarified its intentions. And this time, it's no longer a sneak preview at an investor presentation or an ambiguous phrase: the group has confirmed in black and white the arrival of a new Alfa Romeo compact inspired by the heritage of the 147 and Giulietta. An important announcement that finally restores visibility to the future of the Italian brand.

An initial press release that raised doubts

It all started with the presentation of Stellantis« »Fastlane 2030" plan on May 21. At this Investor Day, Alfa Romeo was particularly discreet. A few hidden silhouettes, some very general announcements and, above all, a lot of unanswered questions.

Right on cue, an initial press release sent to an Italian news agency mentioned the brand's future, with a number of important elements: the Giulia and Stelvio would be maintained until 2027, the arrival of hybrid and electric powertrains, and references to future models based on multi-energy platforms. The problem was that this press release then disappeared, immediately fuelling speculation about a possible withdrawal or premature publication.

Since then, Alfa Romeo has confirmed that no communication has been deliberately suppressed, and that the strategy simply continues to evolve. Above all, a new official press release published on May 25, 2026 now provides much more concrete answers.

The official return of an Alfa Romeo compact

It's the big news of this communication: Alfa Romeo officially confirms the development of a new C-segment compact car. Incredible.

The press release clearly refers to «a new C-segment hatchback» based on the future STLA ONE multi-energy platform. Above all, Stellantis fully assumes the project's historical heritage, explaining that this model «will be based on the icons that are the 147 and Giulietta».

In other words: yes, Alfa Romeo is preparing the return of a compact car to its range. Since the discontinuation of the Giulietta in 2020, the brand had completely deserted this historically essential segment for Alfa Romeo. For decades, models such as the 147, Giulietta, 145 and 156 were the gateway to the Alfa Romeo world for many European customers.

This future compact should therefore mark a genuine return to the brand's fundamentals, with the promise of a model combining technology, efficiency and Alfa Romeo DNA. Even if Stellantis doesn't explicitly refer to it as a «Giulietta», it's hard not to see in this announcement a kind of spiritual rebirth of this historic lineage.

The famous C-SUV is also confirmed

Other important information concerns the project often referred to internally as «A4U». The press release officially confirms the arrival of a new C-SUV based on the STLA Medium platform. This model will be positioned at the heart of the European market, just above the Tonale.

Alfa Romeo promises a vehicle «made in Italy» (i.e. produced in the same plant as the future Lancia Gamma), designed to stand out for its interior quality, performance and driving pleasure. This future SUV will be offered with several types of powertrain, thanks to a multi-energy architecture. A strategy that clearly shows that Stellantis no longer wants to impose all-electricity by force, but to allow greater flexibility according to markets and demand.

Giulia and Stelvio to finally go hybrid

This was probably the other major concern for Alfa Romeo: the future of the Giulia and Stelvio. The new press release now confirms that both models will remain in production until 2027, including their Quadrifoglio versions.

Above all, Stellantis has officially announced that it is working on «new interpretations» of the Giulia and Stelvio, with the gradual arrival of hybrid and electric powertrains. This is a particularly important point, since until now, rumors have sometimes suggested an almost exclusive switch to the 100 % electric.

A clearer strategy

All in all, this new press release profoundly changes the reading of Alfa Romeo's plan. Where the investor presentation had left a feeling of emptiness and uncertainty, Stellantis now makes several structuring elements official: the return of a compact inspired by the 147 and Giulietta, confirmation of the new C-SUV STLA Medium and the evolution of the Giulia and Stelvio towards hybrid and electric ranges.

Above all, Alfa Romeo seems to have rediscovered a more coherent product logic, with a stronger presence in the B, C and D segments. The precise timetable for all these models remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Alfa Romeo is preparing the return of a true compact to its range, and enthusiasts have been waiting a long time for this announcement.

  1. Nothing new, Alfa will have its derivatives of the 308 and 3008. The anomaly is not their presence, but the fact that they disappeared without renewal.

  2. Another press statement that delivers nothing but speculation. The STLA One platform is based on what? Leapmotoer b10 platform od STLA Small platform???? Or maybe Donfeng of BYC or Tata motors platform...

  3. 147 and Giulietta, my two previous cars... this new one should naturally be on my short-list. We'll see, because starting with the STLA-One, which is a derivative of the STLA-Small, itself derived from the CMP (i.e. a Peugeot 208/Corsa/2008/Mokka/Junior/Etc. base), it's already starting with a ball and chain in my eyes. I'm already fed up with Peugeot's rear-view mirrors... But I'm willing to give them a chance, even if it's a tiny one...

  4. When I see the small visual, the proportion of the rear end reminds me of the 208, as do the mirrors and gloss black wheel arches...

You'll have to make an effort for once...

Moreover, the hood is really small, nothing to do with the Giulietta and especially the 147... Well, if it's to put the 1.2L PureToc inside, that's logical, but I'll have to pass on that one.

    • Seriously, the news isn't even a few hours old and you're already saying it's going to suck.

Can't get enough of grumbling all the time?

  5. Sharing platforms enables brands to exist or be reborn.
Without it, there would be no junior, and therefore no more Alfa, which would become dependent on its sales volume. By extending this concept to other levels of the range, alfa will be better off commercially speaking.
So you need to know what level of «personalization» is right for each brand, and the level of investment.

    • Absolutely not true - profits are way more important than volume.
Alfa Romeo doesn't need the Junior, which other than having nothing to do with a premium brand, it also doesn't differ at all from Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600, mechanically-wise.
I don't think it's that good for their image.

      • It's obvious, but some might even be delighted to see a Citroën AMI rebadged as an Alfa Romeo, it wouldn't bother them at all...

  6. I hope the compact and the c-suv won't have the puretoc engine. If there's an interesting choice of engine, it could work, whatever the platform, as long as it performs well. But if it's still the little 1.3 that's pumped up but will never have the torque of a 1750 or a 2.0 l, it's a long shot.

  7. Good news if the Giulietta is finally replaced.
But most of the customers have already left! Same mistake as the non-replacement then too late replacement of the DS4. Or the Punto...or the Bravo, now the basic Tipo, etc... These 2 groups, PSA and above all FCA, are very good at taking the piss out of their good customers, who have been made to understand that they only have to go elsewhere if they want a new vehicle to replace their good car, not after 20 years.

  8. Good news for a future compact car in the tradition of the 147 and Giulietta. Just so long as the engines aren't PureTechs, and there aren't too many Peugeot components.

  9. I don't think it's ugly, it's a change from the Stelvio and Tonale, which don't have the ALFA spirit, but we'll have to wait and see what happens next, which engine, etc....

    • Good news at last!

Of course, there are still many unknowns: which engine, will it be produced in Italy, will it be affordable?

But for once, when Alfa announces something other than an SUV, let's not get carried away.

      Reply
      • They specified for the C-SUV that it would be produced in Italy. If they didn't specify for the next compact based on a city car, there must be a reason...

  11. Great news! Let's hope the design lives up to the 147 and the Guilietta. We do agree that the image of this future compact is not the definitive version?

  13. Finally, good news on paper... because the reality is likely to be disappointing: from the tiny platform? Peugeot engines? if you're going to do that, you might as well do nothing at all.

  14. Finally, something we've been asking for for years and which was impossible: the Firefly engine in European models and a Giulietta. It's sad to have taken so long to understand. The specification sheet and design will have to be in keeping with the brand.

  15. Good news!
the platform, even if it's partly common to several models, will have to have running gear worthy of an ALFA!
    Ditto for the engine: a mini 4-cylinder 1.6 l, especially not a 3-cylinder 1.2 l, even with turbo.

  16. I think the giuletta and delta will derive from a DS4, and the future C-SUV will be nothing more than a Lancia gamma and DS7.
Alfa, weakened by difficult years, cannot develop a platform or engines on its own. We'll have to rely on the latest full-hybrid engine and V6 developed in the US.
For the Stelvio and Giulia, there's a wide STLA platform developed for large, high-end cars, already used by the dodge charger, voted best or even best in the US.
