After several days of vagueness, speculation and even the beginnings of a controversy surrounding the communication from Stellantis, Alfa Romeo has finally clarified its intentions. And this time, it's no longer a sneak preview at an investor presentation or an ambiguous phrase: the group has confirmed in black and white the arrival of a new Alfa Romeo compact inspired by the heritage of the 147 and Giulietta. An important announcement that finally restores visibility to the future of the Italian brand.
An initial press release that raised doubts
It all started with the presentation of Stellantis« »Fastlane 2030" plan on May 21. At this Investor Day, Alfa Romeo was particularly discreet. A few hidden silhouettes, some very general announcements and, above all, a lot of unanswered questions.
Right on cue, an initial press release sent to an Italian news agency mentioned the brand's future, with a number of important elements: the Giulia and Stelvio would be maintained until 2027, the arrival of hybrid and electric powertrains, and references to future models based on multi-energy platforms. The problem was that this press release then disappeared, immediately fuelling speculation about a possible withdrawal or premature publication.
Since then, Alfa Romeo has confirmed that no communication has been deliberately suppressed, and that the strategy simply continues to evolve. Above all, a new official press release published on May 25, 2026 now provides much more concrete answers.
The official return of an Alfa Romeo compact
It's the big news of this communication: Alfa Romeo officially confirms the development of a new C-segment compact car. Incredible.
The press release clearly refers to «a new C-segment hatchback» based on the future STLA ONE multi-energy platform. Above all, Stellantis fully assumes the project's historical heritage, explaining that this model «will be based on the icons that are the 147 and Giulietta».
In other words: yes, Alfa Romeo is preparing the return of a compact car to its range. Since the discontinuation of the Giulietta in 2020, the brand had completely deserted this historically essential segment for Alfa Romeo. For decades, models such as the 147, Giulietta, 145 and 156 were the gateway to the Alfa Romeo world for many European customers.
This future compact should therefore mark a genuine return to the brand's fundamentals, with the promise of a model combining technology, efficiency and Alfa Romeo DNA. Even if Stellantis doesn't explicitly refer to it as a «Giulietta», it's hard not to see in this announcement a kind of spiritual rebirth of this historic lineage.
The famous C-SUV is also confirmed
Other important information concerns the project often referred to internally as «A4U». The press release officially confirms the arrival of a new C-SUV based on the STLA Medium platform. This model will be positioned at the heart of the European market, just above the Tonale.
Alfa Romeo promises a vehicle «made in Italy» (i.e. produced in the same plant as the future Lancia Gamma), designed to stand out for its interior quality, performance and driving pleasure. This future SUV will be offered with several types of powertrain, thanks to a multi-energy architecture. A strategy that clearly shows that Stellantis no longer wants to impose all-electricity by force, but to allow greater flexibility according to markets and demand.
Giulia and Stelvio to finally go hybrid
This was probably the other major concern for Alfa Romeo: the future of the Giulia and Stelvio. The new press release now confirms that both models will remain in production until 2027, including their Quadrifoglio versions.
Above all, Stellantis has officially announced that it is working on «new interpretations» of the Giulia and Stelvio, with the gradual arrival of hybrid and electric powertrains. This is a particularly important point, since until now, rumors have sometimes suggested an almost exclusive switch to the 100 % electric.
A clearer strategy
All in all, this new press release profoundly changes the reading of Alfa Romeo's plan. Where the investor presentation had left a feeling of emptiness and uncertainty, Stellantis now makes several structuring elements official: the return of a compact inspired by the 147 and Giulietta, confirmation of the new C-SUV STLA Medium and the evolution of the Giulia and Stelvio towards hybrid and electric ranges.
Above all, Alfa Romeo seems to have rediscovered a more coherent product logic, with a stronger presence in the B, C and D segments. The precise timetable for all these models remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Alfa Romeo is preparing the return of a true compact to its range, and enthusiasts have been waiting a long time for this announcement.
