Future Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio: hybrid or not? We've got the answer!

GME 3.0L 6-cylinder engine

With the Milano due to be unveiled in 1 month's time, discussions are turning to the future Giulia and Stelvio models. Following a recent communication fromAlfa Romeo to the Italian press about the STLA Large architecture that will equip the new Giulias and Stelvio, due in 2025 and 2026 respectively, some media outlets have been reporting speculation about a possible hybrid version. A surprising turn of events.

By adopting the STLA Large platform from Stellantis, the future Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio will benefit from 800V architecture and 100 % electric powertrains. As we all know, the STLA Large platform is also compatible with internal combustion and hybrid engines. Although we don't know exactly what these hybrid engines will be, it's not impossible that they'll be the GME 3.0L 6-cylinder already present at Jeep and soon at Dodge, with PHEV technology as on the GME 4-cylinder.

However, contrary to what has been said in some media, including Reuters, and on social networks, there are no plans to date to see these engines under the hoods of future Alfa Romeo models. After contacting the Alfa Romeo press office, the confusion suggesting a possible hybridization of the Stelvio and Giulia models was quickly cleared up. Alfa Romeo has firmly corrected this informationconfirming the commitment of 100 % electric engines for future Giulia and Stelvio models. There will be no hybrids in Europe or any other market.

    If I wanted to drive electric, I'd settle for a Fiat 500e, or the future Lancia Ypsilon HF, because I don't see any point in buying a noiseless, characterless electric Alfa Romeo.

    • Like many, I'll be sticking with thermals, but I now know that I can look to the past when it comes to cars, and no longer to the future. I'm really moving on, no more Alfa, but in a way I don't think Stellantis could have done better than the Giulia and the Stelvio.

        I've been waiting a month for a motor to control the air-conditioning damper on my Giulietta (a well-known problem) and I still haven't heard anything from the dealer. The word "premium" is only in the price list of these new models!
        The quality of after-sales service has become deplorable, and this is widely shared on networks and clubs!
        The next one will certainly be a Japanese Toyota, Lexus or Honda and certainly not a Nissan which is a rebadged Renault stuffed with problems! My parents-in-law have had the experience!

        • On the Tonale it's a four-cylinder 100% Fiat. Designed before the merger, this engine is very flexible and reliable, but lacks character, that's all. This is also the criticism levelled at the Giulia's 2.0 L four-cylinder... The Tonale is not without quality, for an SUV. You should read Alexandre's feedback on the site; what held him back was above all the lack of choice in cabin colors and materials.

          Instead of pissing off the world with bullshit rules, the EU should force brands to insure spare parts for at least 20 years, otherwise it's programmed obsolescence (and it'll be even worse with electrics, where everything is thrown away at the slightest battery problem).

  3. Stellantis' decision is all the more incomprehensible given that the end date for the sale of new combustion-powered cars is 2035. 11 years! That's more than enough time for one generation of cars, in hybrid form to avoid deductions.
    How can we believe that everyone will want to switch to electric cars in 2025, without sufficient infrastructure?
    This haste on the part of manufacturers is absurd. And long, arduous electric journeys, with multiple 30-minute breaks, small roads to be avoided from now on, just like mountain roads, will be painful. All that's left is to take the train or the plane, and rent for short trips.
    Or we'll have to stockpile combustion-powered cars to save 10 years.

  6. There are some very serious marketing errors in this choice....
    Electricity will not be the only motorization of the future.
    There's a real niche to be filled with combustion engines offering mid-range performance and a pleasant sound, just what Alfa knows how to make.
    The world market is not following the European trend towards all-electricity, so why deprive ourselves of 70% of world business?
    Alfa's deplorable marketing and strategy has been their trademark since the 70s, and explains why they've gone from market leader in sports sedans (a market they invented) to a small (and very small) thumb!
    Personally, I'm at 110,000 km with my second Giulia and still very satisfied (only 1 breakdown to report in over 350,000 km of Giulietta and Giulia over the last 10 years.... And that was just an injector on my Giulietta QV at 95,000km).

  7. 1/ The hybrid would be totally possible, but Stellantis (ex-PSA side) is probably the only group not to want to invest in it.

    2/ Alfa Romeo becomes an SUV brand. Imparato even wants to transform the world's most beautiful "accessible" sedan into a crossover.

    3/ Even if you're ready to go electric, would you want to start out with a 2-ton crossover/SUV or a hastily redesigned 308?

    The most telling example is the Peugeot Milano, which is nothing like an Alfa Romeo: PSA platform, PSA engines, made outside Italy, and even the design, which is supposed to stand out according to Tavares' way of doing things (see the Mokka and Avenger), seems to be a Peugeot-Citroën-Seat mix with added gimmicks.
