Alfa Romeo in the USA: sales falter despite the arrival of the Tonale

Back in the U.S. for almost 10 years, sales ofAlfa Romeo are, like Europe, in the doldrums. The Tonale SUVavailable from summer 2023, doesn't seem to be enjoying the same success as the Giulia and Stelvio in Uncle Sam's country.on their respective launches.

"America, America, I want it and I'm going to get it. Almost all European automakers would like to live the American Dream in the face of this enormous market in terms of volume and purchasing power. Alfa Romeo has been timidly returning to it with the 4C since 2014, and more concretely since the Giulia in 2017. And if some years have been good ones, the reality of a non-renewed range comes home to roost, despite the Tonale.

In the USA, for example, Alfa Romeo would do barely better in 2023 than in 2022.despite the arrival of the new Tonale model.

Besides, How is the Tonale selling in the USA after just a few months on the market? Well, it's not so bad, with just over 300 units in September 2023... If we look at September alone, it's in the top 3 countries. Yes, but we're talking about the USA, a country that used to buy over 1,000 Stelvios a month in its best years. You'll note that Italy alone buys more Tonales than all the other countries combined.

We'll have to wait at least a year before we can make a definitive judgement.but with a Tonale that is technically very close to its Dodge Hornet cousin and an Alfa Romeo Milano not necessarily suited to this market either, it will probably take a few years for the Italian brand to get back to 2018 figures.

To satisfy your curiosity Alfa Romeo sales by model for the first 9 months of 2023.

  1. The Dodge Hornet is the same car as the Tonale, with more engines and a lower price.
Apart from the Alfa badge and grille, it's more interesting to choose the Hornet. Alfa Romeo screwed up with this internal Hornet/Tonale competition.
It would be interesting to have sales figures for the Dodge Hornet.

  2. As I was saying. The Tonale will be a fiasco or USA because it's unsuitable, just like the Milano.
This brand is dead, as is Lancia, and customers are throwing themselves at the latest Giulia, Stelvio and 4C to keep them warm and make a nice capital gain in due course.

  3. The question to ask is: does the Tonale make your heart beat faster when you look at it?
    Personally, no.
    The Giulia, yes.
    The Stelvio 50/50.
    The next Milano: probably not.
    They become products.

Why would you want to buy an AR when it doesn't even have the emotional appeal of the others?
In the not-too-distant past, AR compensated for its lack of technology with its emotional appeal.

    Now they're back in line....
The biggest mistake was (probably) letting the French decide on the design.
    Look at the French cars.....

I can't wait for the five-year change in France-Italy management (if it comes).
Let's leave the accounting to the French.
    Design goes to the Italians.

  4. You've got to stop dreaming about Alfa-Romeo, it's only chic with pizzaiolo and that's that, and for Lancia it's the same, it's been dead for a long time.

  5. I own a Giulia, and I often think it will be my last. There's no emotion left in the new models, just SUVs with Alfa badges. What's more, making this brand go all-electric in 2027 is heresy. Alfa is technology, diversified, with its share of dielectrics, but it's not a generic Stellantis product. Alfa is dead unless it leaves Stellantis.

    • I couldn't agree more. What's going to be left of Alfa Romeo if there are only electric models left, which will also only be restyled Peugeots?
2027? No, I think the all-electric range is scheduled for 2025-2026.
The only thing left to do is buy old Alfa Romeos on the second-hand market, or move on to other brands that understand that electric cars are a dead end, and that combustion engines are not dead. Electric cars are just a means of getting around town, and nothing else.
