Stellantis: Spanish plant in Vigo well placed for STLA Small platform

The Group Stellantis uses four new platforms for its 14 brands: STLA Small, STLA Medium, STLA Large and STLA Frame. Of these platforms, the STLA Small, aimed at compact city cars, remains the least documented in terms of technical details and assembly locations. However, new information revealed by the Spanish newspaper La Tribuna de Automoción suggest that the Vigo plant in Spain could play a major role in its production.

Key financing for Vigo

The Spanish government recently announced a 29 million euro investment in the Vigo plant, as part of the "Transformation and Resilience Plan" for the automotive industry. This funding is part of Line B of Perte VEC II, an initiative dedicated to supporting the electrical and connected industry. The Minister for Industry, Jordi Hereu, emphasized that this aid is an "important step" towards the official confirmation of production of the STLA Small electric platform in the Galician center.

Stellantis hailed the investment as "an important step and a mark of confidence and support from the Spanish government". The group headed by Carlos Tavares sees this financing as an essential lever for definitively awarding the STLA Small platform to Vigo, while emphasizing that the final amount could increase when the project is definitively examined.

A new STLA Small car for 2027

Although Stellantis has not officially confirmed the allocation of the STLA Small platform to Vigo, internal work suggests that the Galician plant is well on the way to receiving it. According to La Tribuna de AutomociónThe STLA Small platform would be installed on the plant's "System 1", where the Peugeot 2008 is currently assembled.

Production is scheduled to start in September 2027, with a new generation of the electric Peugeot 2008 100 %. However, this transition to electric will not mean the immediate end of combustion engines for the SUV, as Stellantis plans to extend the Peugeot 2008 combustion engine until at least 2029.

Other models expected

The Vigo plant will not be limited to the Peugeot 2008. The Stellantis product plan reveals that the STLA Small platform will serve as the basis for the future Peugeot 208, 2008, Opel Corsa, Fiat 500, DS 3 Crossback and Opel Mokka. It is therefore possible, if not probable, that some of these models will also be produced alongside the Peugeot 2008 at Vigo.

As a reminder, the multi-energy-compatible STLA Small platform should enable electric cars to be offered with a range of 500 km. Not much is known about this platform. Is it really new, or is it an evolution of the Smart platform of the Citroën ë-C3 or the future Fiat Panda, itself derived from PSA's CMP platform? It's hard to say yet.
