Audi could unveil a new R8 with a Lamborghini V8 engine in a few days' time

Two years after production of the Audi R8 ceased, the name of the German supercar could already be back in the spotlight. For several days now, clues have been piling up and converging on the same scenario: Audi is said to be preparing a new V8-powered hybrid sports car, closely linked to the Audi R8. Lamborghini Temerario. Better still, a concept could be presented as early as this weekend at the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix.

If this were to happen, Audi would remain faithful to the recipe that made the R8 such a success. After sharing its foundations with the Lamborghini Gallardo and then the Huracán, the supercar with the rings could once again draw on the know-how of Sant'Agata Bolognese, adopting the technology of the Temerario and its impressive 920 hp V8 hybrid.

Audi boss drops hint

It all started with a statement made by Audi CEO Gernot Döllner during an interview with journalists in Austria at the launch of the new RS5. Asked about the possibility of a third-generation R8, Döllner didn't close the door. Quite the contrary, in fact. He began by praising the Lamborghini Temerario engine:

«It's an excellent V8 engine in the Temerario. 10,000 rpm, a truly exceptional engine.»

A remark that did not go unnoticed. Döllner obviously knows this powertrain very well, and went on to point out that the Volkswagen Group has a huge library of platforms and technologies at its disposal, enabling new models to be created by combining the best technical solutions available. When a journalist suggested the idea of a new Audi R8 based on the Temerario, his response was as short as it was intriguing:

«Good idea.»

Accompanied, according to several witnesses, by a smile and a laugh suggesting that a project might already be in the pipeline.

The ideal engine to revive the R8

Should Audi indeed decide to resurrect its supercar, the choice of engine already seems obvious. The Lamborghini Temerario is powered by an all-new 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo hybrid called the L411. This engine is probably one of the most spectacular ever designed by Lamborghini. Thanks to its flat crankshaft, titanium connecting rods and architecture developed with racing experience, it is capable of reaching 10,000 rpm, and even 10,200 rpm with launch control.

The V8 alone develops 800 hp. Combined with three electric motors, it gives the Temerario a cumulative output of 920 hp. Like we explained in a dedicated article, Lamborghini has designed this engine to last for several generations of models. According to Paolo Racchetti, director of the Temerario range, the L411 has been developed to remain in production «for at least two life cycles», which could take it into the 2040s.

An industrial investment on this scale naturally opens the way to pooling within the Volkswagen Group. Audi seems the most logical candidate to exploit this new engine.

Mysterious sportswoman expected in Monaco

The rumors took on a new dimension this week when an Indian media outlet revealed that Audi was preparing to present an unprecedented concept in Monaco. The manufacturer recently published a teaser referring to Tazio Nuvolari, the Italian motorsport legend who won his last Grand Prix in 1939 at the wheel of an Auto Union, the forerunner of Audi.

According to several sources, this concept will feature a hybrid version of the Temerario's V8. An architecture perfectly suited to a future supercar with a rear mid-engine. Of course, Audi has not officially confirmed this. But the timing is interesting. The brand is currently seeking to redefine its sporting image, while its future electric sports car based on a Porsche platform will not ultimately replace the R8 in the range hierarchy. A new electrified thermal R8 would enable the brand to retain a genuine emotional standard-bearer, while benefiting from Volkswagen Group synergies.

Imminent revelation?

For the moment, Audi is keeping the mystery alive. No names have been officially mentioned, and it's possible that the concept expected in Monaco only indirectly prefigures a future R8. But with statements from Audi's CEO, insistent rumours of a V8-powered hybrid sports car and numerous media winks in recent weeks, it's hard to ignore the obvious. If Audi does indeed unveil a supercar concept this weekend, the question may no longer be if the R8 will return, but when.
