After several years of being marketed exclusively in electric version, thehe Fiat 500 is set to make its comeback with a hybrid powertrain at the end of 2025.. A strategy dictated by the disappointing sales of the electric model in 2024 and the desire of Fiat to offer customers a more affordable alternative. However, integrating a combustion engine into a platform originally designed for electric vehicles is proving to be a real challenge.
A return to thermals to save sales

The idea of a Fiat 500 hybrid is not new. The previous generation, made at Tychy, already offered a FireFly 1.0L 70 hp hybrid block, shared with the Panda. However, the new electric Fiat 500, developed on the Smart City platform and produced at Mirafiori, although compatible, had not been designed to accept a combustion engine. When sales began to fall in 2024, Fiat has taken the urgent decision to develop a hybrid version, which will reach the market at the end of 2025..
A technical headache
One of Fiat's main challenges is to adapt the new 500 hybrid to a platform designed primarily for electric vehicles. Unlike the previous generation of combustion-powered models, manufactured at Tychy, this version will be produced at Mirafiori, with a much more robust structure and a host of new technologies. This evolution implies an increase in total weight, which may have an impact on the hybrid model's performance. We had already mentioned this weight problem a few weeks agoand we now have direct confirmation from the manufacturer: the new Fiat 500 hybrid will be heavier than the old combustion version.
What impact on performance?
Fiat told us that, despite this weight gain, it's still a good choice, driving pleasure remains satisfactory for a city car. However, with an unchanged power output of 70 hp and 92 Nm of torque, performance is likely to lag behind that of the previous 500 hybrid. As a reminder, the latter took 13.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h. The new, heavier version could be even faster.
CO2 emissions are another question mark. The previous 500 hybrid was 108 g/km, and with the increased weight, it's likely that the new hybrid version will be less efficient.
Fiat rises to the challenge
Fiat's engineers are actively working to overcome these constraints and offer a 500 hybrid that lives up to expectations. The aim is to combine an affordable motorization with the comfort, safety and technologies of the new 500, while limiting the impact of weight on performance. The Fiat 500 hybrid will be officially launched in November 2025. Until then, ItalPassion will continue to follow its development closely.
It's not that difficult to put a few more horsepower into this engine, and it would also put us on a par with the competition.
Es ist völlig egal ob eine junge Dame von der einen zur anderen 🚦 15,5 oder 13,5 Sekunden braucht, solche Phrasen können sie VW oder Audi Kunden anrehen,
A mobile engine and the problem is weight gain
Hi, there,
Why not upgrade the 3-cylinder with a 12-valve cylinder head, which already exists for the 120 hp Turbo 3-cylinder (non-hybrid)?
90 to 100 HP would be feasible without a turbo.
At 70 hp, it's likely to be a calf.
70 ps sind zu wenig,!!!!!
It's above all the couple that needs improvement.
A small, low-pressure turbo for better acceleration is more useful at low revs in suburban areas, its preferred terrain.
Nobody needs a 500 hybrid that does 200km/h...
Unless I'm mistaken, I think it's the same 1-liter engine that was once fitted to the typo, with a turbocharger. After that, it's a question of price, but it's certain that 70 hp might still be a bit low, and it would be a pity to have worked so hard on this vehicle to make it a combustion engine too, so that it was useless with such modest power,
Eventually, it would be nice if there was a 70 hp version and the choice of a 90 hp version, but that's just wishful thinking.
Tellantis is not far from stupidity/incapacity
So wie sie auch.
Als mir ist die Motorleistung viel zu gering.
100Ps und 180 Nm, das wärs.
So musste ich zu Abarth und 165Ps mit 250Nm mit Automatik kaufen.
Richard. Have I missed a trick somewhere, is the new 500 hybrid enable
to be driven solely by electricity as I haven't seen any mention of how powerful the electric motor(s) is/are, or is it a mild hybrid similar to the one currently on offer, and if so what is so different about the upcoming version?
it's the same system as the panda
