Fiat: without the Fiat Panda, the brand no longer exists in Italy - figures 2024

fiat-panda

Italy is the first country to publish its registration figures for 2024, and the results for Fiat are without appeal: the brand recorded a decline of -17.63 % compared with 2023. While Fiat is struggling to maintain its market share, a detailed analysis of these figures reveals thatone car does almost all the work: the Fiat Panda.

Fiat's figures for Italy in 2024: an alarming fall

In 2024, Fiat registered 143,814 vehicles in Italy, compared with 174,587 in 2023, a net drop of 17.63 %. Yet one detail stands out: of these 143,814 sales, almost 70 %s (99,871 units) are allocated exclusively to the Fiat Panda. A model that has single-handedly become Fiat's mainstay in Italy.

The Fiat Panda continues to reign supreme, ranking top of the list of best-selling cars in Italy in 2024all brands combined. Fiat's strategy of maintain this model until 2030 is now clearer: Panda must remain available and accessibleparticularly in its home market, where it remains a flagship model. The brand is therefore focusing all its strategy on the continuity of the Panda, but will also have to pay close attention to new version expected after 2030.

Fiat registrations in Italy

Other Fiat models struggle to take off

Behind the Fiat Panda, there's no great satisfaction for Fiat. In 24th place among the best-selling cars in Italy are the Fiat 500 with 17,138 registrations. But what is striking is that only 2,345 of these models are electric versions. This figure proves that the electric Fiat 500, although made in Italy, is a real winner, still too expensive for Italian consumers. The latter prefers to turn to hybrid models, particularly the more affordable Polish-made version.

The Fiat 500X, another old model, is in 40th position with 11,278 salesand for this model. As for the all-new Fiat 600she doesn't even feature in the top 50 of the best-selling vehicles. Over the whole of 2024, only 934 registrations are recorded for the electric version of the Fiat 600. A relatively modest figure for a model that was to embody the brand's future.

Boosting sales with the Grande Panda

Faced with this situation, Fiat absolutely must act by 2025. The launch of the Grande Panda Thermique Hybride seems to be the best solution for boosting sales. This hybrid model could breathe new life into Fiat, particularly in Italy where the Panda remains an absolute benchmark. With its attractive price tag, this model could attract consumers looking for a modern, affordable hybrid vehicle.

At the same time, Fiat is preparing the launch of new versions of the Fiat 500 electric and 500 hybrid thermal, scheduled for release in November 2025 (see our article Fiat: 4 new products expected in 2025). These models could be a real answer to the expectations of Italian consumers, who prefer affordable prices.

It's important for Fiat to get things right, and fast. Lack of anticipation concerning the launch of the new 500 hybrid, a price cut for the 500 electric, and the launch of the Grande Panda thermal hybrid is paid for in 2024. As a reminder Italy is still Fiat's second-largest marketbehind Brazil and ahead of Turkey.

  1. In Italian cities, there's no infrastructure for recharging electric cars. How can you want to buy an electric car in such a situation?
The Fiat Panda hybrid is inexpensive and very practical, making it an ideal city car. So it's only natural that it should account for the bulk of Fiat's sales.

    • Sorry, that's not true. There are electric charging points in every village, even in the south. And there are superchargers on the freeways at almost every petrol station.

      • I haven't counted the number of electric terminals in the Italian cities I've visited recently, but I haven't seen many.
For freeway stations, of course there are chargers.

  2. La pandina deve rimanere perché è un punto forte per la FIAT e incrementerà le vendite se la FIAT farà dei incentivi grazie e buon anno nuovo.

  3. The 136-horsepower 208 electric has just lost 6,000 euros in the French catalog, pricing power is a failure and it's over... I still think the Tipo is important if it's sold at the right price (it's already 20,000 euros cheaper than a 115-horsepower Golf diesel, and the entire stock was sold in France in just a few days), and the Panda mild hybrid with scrappage bonus is less than 10,000 euros in Italy until the end of the month. It's obviously selling.

    • The tipo has never convinced anyone, and customers have long since gone elsewhere. I'm afraid that the desert crossing for Italian brands will last a very long time... As for the 208, I'd like to see an Italian model as convincing and widespread as it is. We're a long way from that.

  4. This is my second Fiat panda and the 16th Fiat since
1966 and for me the best of all my Fiat's
    I'm 78 and still drive a Fiat
First panda 165,000 km without breakdown
The second current 60000 without problem I intend to keep another 5 years very satisfied panda
    Thank you

    • I totaly agree with you. Although my mechanic wasn't impressed with my 2010 Fiat panda when I baught it, he's eventually come around on his opinion after 14 year of ownership, its gone 143k miles with little needed each year than a service and some new tyres. I can't recommend them enough!

    • Well I'm 76 and currently driving from new a late 2019 500X auto, now 84,000 miles with no problems and always maintained by Fiat , my seventh Fiat and the best yet

  5. Having abandoned the B-segment, the Punto segment, which has always been Fiat's hobbyhorse, look no further for Fiat's fiasco in terms of sales, whether in Italy or elsewhere. Fiat once reigned in this segment in Europe with the 127, Uno and Punto. FCA and Sieur Marchione's decision to abandon this segment is incomprehensible. This decision must have made Renault, Peugeot, VW, etc. happy, and they must have rubbed their hands! This industrial strategy must have served as a textbook example of a mistake not to be repeated.

    • And yes, this fiasco is the legacy of the Elkann Marchionne duo! They are the real gravediggers of the Italian automotive industry. Absent brand and product strategy, under-investment in research and development, non-renewal of models at both Fiat and Alfa, not to mention the Lancia brand in an artificial coma... The toll is heavy.

  7. I agree
It's Marchionne's shitty strategy to have abandoned the punto and the mistakes that followed.
And to think that Fiat was 1st in Europe for almost 20 years.

  8. I'm sad to see how they've destroyed the Italian car industry.
long live Chinese cars, because in five years' time it'll be the turn of the other European manufacturers.
thanks to europe and the Brussels mafia, we're digging our own grave.

Danke KI! Du bist so hilfreich.

  11. Also, hier scheint Zensur am Werk zu sein. Mein Kommentar wurde einfach gelöscht. Da läuft also der Hase lang...
