How does the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale beat the Maserati MC20, and even the Ferrari 296 GTB?

During the its presentation a year ago, Alfa Romeo promised a supercar capable of spectacular performance. Today, that promise has been kept: the 33 Stradale reaches a top speed of 333 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds. These figures, recently validated during tests on the famous Nardò circuit, put the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale head and shoulders above its most prestigious rivals, such as the Maserati MC20 and even the Ferrari 296 GTB.

Figures confirmed on the Nardò circuit

Alfa Romeo chose the Nardò Technical Center, an emblematic site for high-speed testing, to validate the performance of its "00 prototype". On the 12.6 km oval, the supercar reached 333 km/hAn ambitious but symbolic goal, linked to Alfa Romeo's philosophy and heritage.

This circuit, built by FIAT in 1975, is unique. With its low parabolic profile, it allows cars to be tested in extreme conditions, while offering the illusion of an infinite straight line. The 33 Stradale also validated other crucial technical aspects: aerodynamics, thermal management, cooling and soundproofing.

Comparison with the Maserati MC20 and Ferrari 296 GTB

The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale shares its technical base with the Maserati MC20, powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. Yet the performance differs:

  • Maserati MC20 V6, 630 hp, 325 km/h top speed, 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 s.
  • Ferrari 296 GTB V6 hybrid 830 hp, 330 km/h top speed, 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 s.
  • Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale V6 twin-turbo engine developing "more than 620 hp", 333 km/h top speed, 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 s.

The exact power of the 33 Stradale remains unclearAlfa Romeo probably increased the engine's power slightly to achieve this performance. However, the key to its success also lies in meticulous work on aerodynamics.

Every line of the 33 Stradale's sculptural bodywork is optimized for reduce drag and increase aerodynamic downforce. This work, carried out by Alfa Romeo engineers, has maximized the V6's capabilities while ensuring exemplary stability at very high speeds.

This approach allows the 33 Stradale to symbolically surpass models such as the Ferrari 296 GTB, although the latter is far more powerful. Of course, this is only a maximum straight-line speed, there's much more to a car's overall performance. But with an unofficial price tag approaching 3 million euros, the 33 Stradale can well afford to be the best in this respect.

A tribute to Alfa Romeo heritage

The 33 Stradale, limited to just 33 units, is not just a demonstration of performance. It's a tribute to the history of Alfa Romeo, taking its name and spirit from the legendary 33 Stradale of 1967.

  1. 296 did 350km/h+ on speedo (like this Alfa's 333km/h top speed on speedo) and 335km/h+ on GPS in a top speed test by AutoTopNL. Ferrari officially quoted a top speed of >330km/h for the 296, it is far ahead of the other two cars.
