Rumors about the development of a new V8 engine at Stellantis have been circulating for several months, and even more so since the resignation of Carlos Tavers, fueled by certain American media and youtubers. But what is it really? Is it true, or just baseless speculation?
The current situation at Stellantis
Before exploring this rumor, let's take a look at the combustion engines currently in production at Stellantis. In Europe, the largest engine used by the group to date is a V6, including thee 2.9L/3.0L V6, which equips models such as the Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio and certain Maserati versions, such as the MC20 and Trofeo. In addition to this engine, Stellantis also offers the new GME 3.0L T6, an in-line 6-cylinder engine derived from the GME T4, available mainly on the US market.
Where does this V8 rumour come from?
Speculation about a potential new V8 engine comes largely from the American media and youtubers. The latter claim that Stellantis is developing a V8 in the greatest secrecy.specifically for its Dodge models. However, this information remains unclear.
What's important to understand is that the American media aren't actually confirming an ongoing development, but rather speculating on the subject. They don't talk about proven facts, but ask questions such as "Why should Stellantis work on a new V8?" or "Why would a V8 be necessary for Stellantis' American models?". In other words, these articles and videos suggest that, given the expectations of the American market, Stellantis might consider developing a V8 engine, just as some European media, including Italpassion, are talking about the desire for a V6 PHEV engine for the European market.
The reality of development at Stellantis
To date, there's no official information on the development of a V8 engine at Stellantis. Available information indicates that no such project is underway. To put things in perspective, there is not even any development on a V6 PHEV engine, a project that would be much more in line with Stellantis' priorities in terms of sustainability and energy transition. A V8 engine, though emblematic of the past for some American and European brands alike, simply seems out of place for the group at present.
The latest large combustion engine developed by Stellantis remains the GME-T6, an in-line 6-cylinder engine designed and produced in the United Statesspecifically for Jeep, RAM and Dodge models. And although some fans of these brands may be nostalgic for V8sThe reality is that Stellantis, like the rest of the automotive industry, is now directing a large part of its research and development efforts towards electric motors and batteries. It is on these technologies that the Group's future rests, far more than on the development of new combustion engines.
No, Stellantis is not working on a new V8 engine
In short, although the rumor of a V8 engine at Stellantis is much talked about, but not backed up by concrete evidence. For the time being, Stellantis continues to focus on development of electric motors. The group has no immediate need to relaunch the development and production of a V8 engine, and for the time being, this rumor appears to be pure speculation. In the meantime, There's nothing to stop Stellantis from extending the life of the current V8, as long as there's demand and regulations allow.
The HEMI V8 was killed off by Tavares. Production continued until 2024, I believe. It won't be too difficult to relaunch it in a new Charger or Challenger.
Klares ja zum legendären V8... Klang.. Kraft.. Haltbarkeit unangefochten ein super Motor und der neue v6 im RAM z. B. Ist nicht sparsamer..
So what..
