The 730 HP Ferrari V6 is meant for the track… except that this prototype could be its road-going version

Just a few weeks ago, we thought that Ferrari had unveiled its latest product for 2026. And, it must be said, with a touch of disappointment. On September 13, the brand presented the spectacular 296 GT Modificata, a Ferrari with a 730 HP V6 engine, no hybrid system, and even more radical than a 296 GT3 Evo. Everything about it resembled the famous «296 Challenge Stradale» we’d been hoping for… except that it wasn’t street-legal.

Reserved for the Club Competizioni GT program and a handful of customers, the 296 GT Modificata seemed to dash our hopes of seeing a road-legal 296 Radicale. In the end, though, we may have written off that project far too quickly.

A mysterious prototype photographed in front of Ferrari

A new prototype has in fact just been photographed near the Ferrari plant in Maranello. Hidden beneath particularly heavy camouflage is undoubtedly a 296, but not a version we’re already familiar with. The images taken by Manfredi Marchese show a car covered in double camouflage and fake body panels. According to Marchese, the prototype already has its final bodywork—a concealment technique Ferrari has previously used on advanced prototypes of the Daytona SP3, F80 or, more recently, the Luce. Two possibilities were initially considered: the replacement for the 296, potentially due in 2027, or this famous «296 Challenge Stradale.» But one factor reportedly tipped the scales: the sound of the engine.

A V6 without a hybrid system

According to another car spotter at the scene, varryx, this mysterious Ferrari is said to be powered by a twin-turbo V6 without a hybrid system. This information has obviously yet to be officially confirmed, but it strongly supports the theory that this is a very radical, street-legal 296. And this inevitably brings to mind the 296 GT Modificata, unveiled just a month ago. That model features a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 730 HP and 800 Nm, with no electric assistance.

There is currently no way to say for certain that this new Ferrari road car will have exactly that much power. But Ferrari now has a particularly high-performance non-hybrid V6 in its parts library. Visually, this «Challenge Stradale» should also go much further than a standard 296, notably featuring a road-legal rear wing and a front fascia adapted to accommodate various sensors.

See you in a month in Barcelona

We probably won’t have to wait very long to find out the truth. This new Ferrari is set to be unveiled at the 2026 Finali Mondiali, taking place November 17–23 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. So the 296 GT Modificata may not have been the end of the story after all, but rather a preview. Because if the reports surrounding this prototype are confirmed, Ferrari will unveil in just over a month exactly what we’ve been hoping for: a supercar derived from the 296, even more radical, equipped with a non-hybrid V6, and—this time—street-legal.
