About a month ago, the owner of the very first De Tomaso P72 R seriesHe finally received the keys to his car, after nearly seven years of waiting since orders opened in 2019. Since then, rather than keeping it tucked away in a private collection, he seems to have decided to enjoy this exceptional car to the fullest. After Germany, the exclusive P72 «Aurelian Night» has now been spotted in Monaco, offering enthusiasts another opportunity to admire one of the rarest cars of the moment.
From Frankfurt to Monaco, a P72 that never stands still
When De Tomaso When the first P72 destined for a customer was unveiled in early June, many assumed it would quickly disappear into an air-conditioned garage. As it turns out, that wasn't the case.
Just a few days after it was delivered, this P72 had already been spotted in Munich, before causing a sensation in late June on the streets of Frankfurt. With each appearance, the scene played out the same way: passersby stopping in their tracks, smartphones at the ready, and drivers intrigued by this silhouette that looked as if it had come straight out of the 1960s 24 Hours of Le Mans.
A month later, the same car continued its journey. This time, it was headed for the Principality of Monaco, where several videos show the supercar cruising leisurely among the luxury hotels and exceptional cars that usually line the streets of Monaco. There’s no mistaking it: the German license plate EI DT72 is indeed the same one seen during its previous appearances.
A moving work of art that catches everyone's eye
Even in Monaco, where Ferraris, Bugattis, and Paganis are practically part of the scenery, the De Tomaso P72 does not go unnoticed. Its “Aurelian Night” paint—a deep blue designed to evoke the transition from day to night—completely changes its appearance depending on the light. The numerous hand-polished rose gold accents—from the wheels and side mirrors to the trim and body details—further enhance its unique character.
Directly inspired by the legendary De Tomaso P70, the P72 features highly organic lines, with generously curved fenders, a narrow cockpit, and proportions that stand in stark contrast to modern hypercars. More than just a showcase of performance, it appears to be a true sculpture in motion.
A seven-year wait for 72 cars
Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2019, the De Tomaso P72 underwent a particularly lengthy development process before reaching its first customers. Deliveries did not truly begin until 2026, nearly seven years after the first reservations were placed.
Yet beneath this neo-retro bodywork lies a decidedly modern powertrain. Its 5.0-liter supercharged V8—originally from Ford and tuned by Roush Performance—delivers approximately 700 ch and 820 Nm of torque, transmitted exclusively to the rear wheels via an extremely rare six-speed manual transmission.
With only 72 units produced, the P72 was already destined to become a classic car even before it went on sale. But its first owner seems intent on giving it a very different destiny: that of a car built to be driven, to be seen, and to share with the public a piece of De Tomaso’s reborn history. After Munich, Frankfurt, and now Monaco, it’s a safe bet that this first P72 will continue to turn heads wherever it goes.
