He pushes the Alfa Romeo Giulia's 4-cylinder engine to 400 hp... and says that's not yet the maximum.

The tuner MTD (Multiair Tuning & Developments), already known for transforming the small 1.4L MultiAir from the’Alfa Romeo MiTo into a 530hp monster, returns with a spectacular new project. This time, the team is tackling the GME 2.0L turbo engine in the’Alfa Romeo Giulia, With a very different philosophy: to create a true family sedan capable of delivering 400 hp... while remaining usable on a day-to-day basis. And the first results are already impressive: 0 to 100 km/h is claimed in just 4.2 seconds.

An Alfa Romeo Giulia «wagon» with 400 hp

In contrast to the extreme project based on the MiTo, MTD explains that it worked on a Giulia conceived above all as a versatile road car. A fast wagon, capable of very high performance without totally transforming the car.

To reach 400 hp, the tuner used his «Kit400» recipe. According to MTD, this includes an MTD turbo, a Stage 1 camshaft, a 76 mm downpipe and Stage 3 engine reprogramming. The automatic gearbox has also been specially mapped for faster gear changes and engine speeds up to 7000 rpm. Boost pressure has been increased to 2.0 bar.

Preparation still limited by certain original elements

Already impressive, MTD claims it has not yet reached the Giulia's full potential. The tuner cites a number of limitations linked to the choice to retain certain original components in order to maintain a comfortable, unobtrusive ride.

The OEM rear silencer limits the possibility of further increasing turbo pressure. The same applies to the intake cooling system, also retained in OEM configuration. Despite an electronically reworked coolant pump, intake temperatures would tend to rise after several accelerations or standing starts.

Finally, the original suspension springs complicate the transfer of power from the ground to the front axle, especially under hard acceleration. In spite of this, the claimed performance is already very serious for a Giulia designed for road use.

MTD sets its sights even higher

The tuner has no intention of stopping there. Several upgrades are already planned, including the installation of threaded combos, a new exhaust system and a modified cooling circuit.

With these improvements, MTD estimates that this Alfa Romeo Giulia could break 11 seconds for the 0 to 400-metre standing start. Even more impressive is the announced target of under 10 seconds for 100 to 200 km/h. By way of comparison, the current record claimed by MTD on this exercise is already 10.57 seconds corrected.

The 2.0L GME continues to surprise

Since its launch, the 2.0L turbocharged GME engine has often been praised for its preparation potential. But this project shows once again how well this engine can cope with high power levels while retaining a certain versatility.

  1. Interesting. It might also be possible to do the opposite, i.e. seek maximum performance in terms of fuel efficiency! At a time when petrol prices are soaring, could the Giulia 2l only consume 5l?

  2. I give cheap. I had my Giulia reprogrammed to 320 hp, since then problems with the multiair. 3000 E of bills in the end. I don't recommend it.
