The Tesla Model Ythis 100 % electric SUV has become a worldwide bestseller. By 2023, nearly 1.2 million units had been sold, an impressive figure that underlines Tesla's appeal to consumers, particularly in North America and China. In the first half of 2024 alone, over 100,000 units were sold in Europe. A dazzling success for the American brand, but at Stellantis, which now includes 14 brands (15 including Leapmotor), the competition is still a long way off.
While the merger of FCA and PSA has enabled Stellantis to expand its portfolio of vehicles, one might ask: which of the brand's models can really compete with the Tesla Model Y? Let's take a look at what's available and what's on the horizon.
Tesla Model Y: a benchmark for technology and performance
Before looking for competitors, it is essential to remember what makes the Tesla Model Y a benchmark in its segment. With its 4.75 metres in lengthhis maximum speed of 217 km/hand its 0 to 100 km/h performance in 6.9 secondsThis is a fast, high-tech SUV. Its WLTP range of 455 km is also a major asset. All in a price range starting at around 45 000 €. In terms of technology, the Model Y is extremely advanced, offering features such as autonomous driving and an intuitive infotainment system.
Stellantis' competitors: a tough challenge
Peugeot e-3008: an alternative already available, but not yet up to scratch
The Peugeot e-3008 is currently one of the closest answers at Stellantis. With a length 4.54 metresIt is slightly shorter than the Tesla Model Y, but remains in the same price range, at around 45 000 €. Its WLTP range is 529 kmslightly higher than that of the Model Y, but its maximum speed of 170 km/h and its 0 to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds are well below Tesla's performance. While the Peugeot e-3008 is a good electric SUV, it lags behind Tesla in terms of dynamism and technology.
According to a press release issued by the brand in August 2024, the Peugeot e-3008 is said to have received around 12,000 orders in the space of two months. If this is indeed the case, it should soon appear in the rankings of top-selling electric models in Europe, where it does not currently appear.
Fiat Giga Panda: entry-level probably not up to scratch
A more affordable alternative could come from Fiat Giga Pandaa future electric model from Fiat which could offer a range of up to 400 km for a price of around 30 000 à 35 000 €. However, the Fiat Giga Panda will be based on the STLA Smartdesigned for more compact models, which could limit its performance, range and level of technology. This little city car could appeal to a wider public, but it probably won't be able to compete with the Tesla Model Y on aspects such as power and on-board technologies.
Lancia Gamma: hope, but not before 2026
The model that could really challenge the Tesla Model Y is the Lancia Gammaa 4.60-metre C-SUVwhich will be launched in 2026. It will be based on platform STLA Mediummore suited to mid-size SUVs. Lancia plans a HF version Gamma for 2027, with enhanced performance and transmission 4-wheel drive. If this Lancia manages to offer performances close to those of the Tesla Model YIt could become a serious alternative, provided its price and technologies live up to expectations. A key element will be its design, inspired by the Pu+Rawhich promises a refined interior and elegant exterior. But unfortunately, we'll have to wait 2026 to discover this model.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio: an overpriced alternative?
The future Alfa Romeo Stelvioone of the brand's iconic models, will also have its own version. 100 % electric in the future. For the moment, a lot of information is unclear, but the Stelvio will be based on platform STLA Largeand should therefore offer good performance. However, with the current model selling at 55 800 € in its diesel 160 hp, it is likely that the electric version will be much more expensive than the Tesla Model Ywhich could limit its competitiveness against the American brand.
Stellantis already behind on new models?
Excluding Fiat Giga Panda based on STLA Smart platformwhich might not offer the performance and technologies needed to compete with the Tesla Model Yand theAlfa Romeo Stelviowhich is likely to be more expensive, only the Lancia Gamma remains as a serious short-term competitor, provided it outperforms the Peugeot e3008. However, the latter will only be available in 2026A delay that could prove problematic in the face of Tesla's rapid development.
Tesla has no intention of standing still. In the meantime, an advanced version of the Tesla Model Y, known as the Juniper, is due to arrive in 2025.. If this new version offers significant improvements, Stellantis could find itself having to make up for an already substantial technological and commercial backlog. The question remains: Will Stellantis be able to catch up and offer competitive models before Tesla gets a head start?

You're being optimistic: the Gamma's chassis will be very similar to the e3008's, so don't expect the engines to be any different.
The Model Y's real competitor at Stellantis is the e 5008, available in 3 versions:
Standard Range 210 hp and 73 kWh battery from BYD
Long Range 230hp and 97kWh battery from ACC
Performance 320hp AWD and 73 kWh battery from ACC.
The e 5008 SR is due to evolve in 2025 with the adoption of an 82 kWh ACC battery with 230 hp.
The Opel Grandland is due to inaugurate it.
The e5008 is superior to the ModelY in terms of comfort/housing/inspiration/design, and offers very similar performance in terms of efficiency. It lags behind in terms of fast charging, on-board technology and price, although it is competitive, especially in the entry-level segment.
The Fiat will be positioned in a lower segment and will be modelled on the C3 Aircross/Opel Frontera duo, but with a much lower level of performance.
The Stelvio 2 is announced with superior technology to the Tesla Y: higher-capacity batteries, 800V recharging, and greater power and price.
