Don't call it Puretech, call it T-Gen3

The 1.2L PureTech engine has long been a cornerstone of the thermal strategy of Stellantis. But it also carries with it a heavy reputation, forged by years of technical problems, in particular those linked to the oil-soaked timing belt present on Gen1 and Gen2 versions. A costly technical error that has permanently tarnished the image of this engine, which is widely used in Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Jeep and DS models.

A reputation to rebuild

Since 2023, Stellantis has tried to turn the page with the introduction of the third generation of the 1.2L, the PureTech EB2 Gen3, finally incorporating a much more reliable chain drive, correcting the shortcomings of previous generations. This engine is now available on a wide range of vehiclesincluding hybrid models such as the Fiat 600, the Lancia Ypsilon, theAlfa Romeo Junioras well as Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Jeep.

However, despite these improvements, the PureTech's image remained too negative to be maintained. As a result Stellantis discreetly withdrew the "PureTech" name from the catalogs in September 2024, simply replacing it with words like "Hybrid" or "1.2 Hybrid Turbo", depending on the brand.

T-Gen 3: a new identity

But this nameless transition could not last. After several months of silence, a new name discreetly appeared in the Fiat catalog in May 2025: T-Gen 3. From now on, the Italian brand's hybrid engines will be known as "T-Gen 3 1.2 Hybrid Turbo".

This name is not just a marketing ploy. It reflects a strategy of technical rehabilitation around the 3rd generation EB2 engine, while capitalizing on a more neutral, even valorizing name: "T" for "Turbo", "Gen3" to clearly signify the new generation. A clever way to regain control of the engine's story and dissociate it from previous generations.

For the moment, this new name only appears in official Fiat communications. As for LanciaAt Alfa Romeo, the term "1.2 Hybrid Turbo" is still used. At Alfa Romeo, the term "Ibrida 1.2L" dominates, and at Peugeot, Citroën, Opel or Jeep, it's always the "Hybrid" appellation that's used in brochures.

But everything suggests that T-Gen 3 is set to become the standard technical name throughout the Stellantis group.

The same engine, but a better-selling name

From a technical point of view, this T-Gen 3, or EB2 GEN3, marks a real break with the puretech 1.2L EB2 GEN2: timing chain, better lubrication, lower maintenance requirements. It already powers a wide range of internal combustion and light hybrid models, including eDCT dual-clutch vehicles. And while Latin America still uses the FireFly/GSE engine, Europe, Turkey, North Africa and Algeria are gradually migrating to the new engine.

3 opinions on "No longer call this Puretech engine, but T-Gen3"

  1. Changing the name won't make this engine reliable, despite technical improvements. They can keep their unworthy 1.2 engine in an Alfa Romeo or Lancia, or even in a Fiat, which has the much better FireFly.
With the departure of the Tavares disaster, we'd hoped to be done with PureTech everywhere, and that's not the case.

  2. E tutti i poveretti, come me? Stellantis dovrebbe pagare i danni. Indistintamente e a tutti quelli che hanno avuto la sventura di avere un'auto con quel motore.
