The technical future ofAlfa Romeo is still shrouded in mystery, but we have been able to obtain some exclusive new information from a reliable source. And it confirms a number of rumors, as well as clarifying the Italian brand's future direction, particularly in terms of hybrid powertrains.
Stelvio pushed back to 2027
It was just a rumor has been confirmed: the launch of the new Stelvio, initially scheduled for 2025, has been postponed by two years. Alfa Romeo now expects it to arrive in 2027. This delay is explained by the technological update around hybridization. The brand is actively working on the subject, but has not yet made a definitive choice between the various hybrid solutions. These could be PHEV (plug-in hybrid), REEV (range-extending hybrid) or other.
This postponement implies a forced extension of the lifespan of current models, namely the Giulia (launched in 2016) and the Stelvio (2017). Alfa Romeo will therefore have to rely on its Junior (2024) and Tonale (2022) duo to ensure its presence on the market alongside these two vehicles, which are now at the end of their careers. A delicate situation...
Return of the 4-cylinder hybrid engine
Another important revelation: At the same time, Alfa Romeo is working on the return of the 4-cylinder engine in an electrified version. Although no technical details were given, it's likely to be the 4-cylinder 2.0L GME engine, given that the 4-cylinder 1.6L EP6 is already available but probably not powerful enough for models like Giulia and Stelvio.
Nettuno rather than GME T6 for the next Quadrifoglios
For high-performance Quadrifoglio versions, Alfa Romeo seems to have made up its mind: the Nettuno V6, already seen on the Maserati MC20, an evolution of Alfa Romeo's 2.9L V6, would be preferred to the GME T6 in-line 6-cylinder block. This choice would enable the brand to remain faithful to a V6 architecture, while making the most of internal synergies at Stellantis... notably with the Maserati brand. The GME T6 would remain reserved for the North American market.
Whether for the 4-cylinder 2.0L GME engine or the 3.0L V6, this would be good news for the future of the Termoli plant in Italy.
Roadmap for future models?
This change in schedule could reshuffle the cards for the models that were to follow. The renewal of the Tonale, once planned for 2027 on the STLA Medium platform, could be postponed. As for the large electric SUV planned for the USA, macro-economic uncertainties could call it into question. Finally, the return of a compact car to the C segment, eagerly awaited by enthusiasts, could also be affected by this slippage in the timetable.
The big question now is when Alfa Romeo will confirm this new schedule...
In short, the synergies remain the same as in the FCA era. If they can also go back to a common design department (with a two-year delay, why not), that would be pure common sense. Finally, back to Arese.
I hadn't even read your comment before posting mine!
Clearly, it should be forbidden to offer anything like the Junior or Stelvio 2 in the future...
I'd love a JTD
Very good news for Nettuno... This engine will have much more charm than a "vulgar" American engine, even if the latter looks very good.
Good news for powertrains!
On the other hand, if the Stelvio 2 is scheduled for launch in 2027, wouldn't it be possible to change the design by then? 😬
Waiting for the return of diesel...without adblue. Be patient! .... Nobody is obliged to buy electrics, hybrids, 3-cylinder petrols, crappy puretechs, adblue diesels, etc ... The green fascism implemented by the States, enslaving citizens and manufacturers, produces monsters that are neither reliable nor durable.
Diesel is for trucks.
Why wait for the new Stelvio and Giulia, when the current models are still the best sedans and SUVs in their segments? The design hasn't aged a bit, the chassis is perfect, and the driving pleasure is intense. But in France, the malus makes them hard to sell.
Another long delay, but at least the engines look interesting for future models.
Agree that exterior styling and performance is in a league of its own, but interior needs to be completely redone. Fit, finish, materials and options need to be on par with the competition, especially infotainment. These details holds stelvio back in my opinion. Oh, and please market it this time. Dealer networks (lack of) and experience is subpar.
I purchased a grecale, but am keeping my stelvio. It's "raw fun" vs refinement of the MAs, but raw isn't good enough in this market.
Normally, the current Giulia and Stelvio should have had the right to hybrid, a major error of strategy on the part of Imparato and Tavares who wanted the new models to be electric only, and well we see the result today, more than a year lost for the launch of the new Stelvio!
Karakter.....
Well, with all that, we'll have to thank the bunch of incompetents who ran FCA or simply slashed investment in Alfa 10 years ago. Given the response time in the auto industry, we can see the consequences now. A change in strategy, if it only starts now, won't be visible for another 5 years at the earliest. By then, the last fanboys will be dead🤣
