Maserati It may not have had any official new models to unveil during Monterey Car Week, but the Trident brand still found a way to make headlines. Maserati’s design director, Klaus Busse—who was in California all week and served on the jury for the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance—took advantage of the event to publicly float a rather appealing idea: what if Maserati created its own Vision Gran Turismo?
A proposal that didn't go entirely unnoticed, since Klaus Busse submitted it directly to Takuya Asano, GT Explore Director at Polyphony Digital.
A meeting at Pebble Beach that could spark some ideas
On his social media accounts, Klaus Busse posted a short video of his meeting with the man he calls «Taku-san,» along with a question for enthusiasts: «I ran into Taku-san from Polyphony at Pebble. What do you think of the idea of a Maserati Vision GT concept?» In the video, Maserati’s head of design takes it a step further. Speaking to Takuya Asano, he explains that they’re considering the possibility of creating a Maserati Vision GT. The response from the Polyphony Digital representative is immediate: «I’m in, yeah, let’s do it!»
The tone is obviously relaxed, and at this stage, there’s no basis for saying that a program has been officially launched. But most notably, the two men wrap up their conversation by asking the audience what kind of car Maserati should design. It’s a rather clever way to gauge the reaction of enthusiasts… and perhaps to plant a first seed.
Maserati is still missing from the list
In any case, the idea would make sense. Launched in 2013 to celebrate Gran Turismo’s 15th anniversary, the Vision Gran Turismo program allows automakers and designers to imagine cars free from many of the constraints of production vehicles. These virtual creations then become part of the Gran Turismo universe, although some have also led to the creation of full-scale models or concept cars.
Most notably, several major names in the Italian automotive industry have already answered the call. Lamborghini has its spectacular Lambo V12 Vision Gran Turismo, Ferrari unveiled its Vision Gran Turismo in 2022, while Italdesign and Zagato have also participated in the program. Some Vision GTs have even gone beyond being mere virtual exercises and influenced actual production models.

This year’s Monterey Car Week had a special appeal for fans of Italian cars, since neither Maserati nor Alfa Romeo officially presented any cars there. In the absence of a new model unveiling, Klaus Busse stepped into the role of a Trident sales representative. And what better playground for a design director than a Vision Gran Turismo? Free from the usual constraints of a production model, Maserati could push the brand’s design language to the limit, revisit its sporting heritage, or—on the contrary—envision a GT that’s entirely focused on the future.

I'm sorry, but all this talk is getting us nowhere. It's time to finally bring out a new model—the Ghibli is long overdue, and so is the Quattroporte. Even an MC20 reimagined as an MC25 with a V8 would breathe new life into the company! Action, not words.
