Fiat: Stellantis' new CEO calls the brand's future into question?

Advertising

On June 23, 2025, Antonio Filosa will officially take the helm at Stellantis. A change of direction that could have far more far-reaching consequences than you might think, not least for FiatThe Group's historic brand is in the midst of a transformation that requires new models.

A range still seeking its balance

For several years now, Fiat has been trying to redefine its place in the European automotive landscape. The Fiat 500e, produced at Mirafiori and launched in 2020, was to embody the brand's electric revival. Unfortunately, after a promising start.., sales collapsed in 2024These are the result of overpriced vehicles and increasingly fierce competition in the electric city car segment.

Conversely, the Fiat 600 seems to be finding its audience at last. Based on the Peugeot 2008 platform, and initially offered in an electric 100 % version in 2023, it has been available in a hybrid version since 2024. the latest figures show that this timesales are on the up.

Another announced success is the Fiat Grande Panda, unveiled in the summer of 2024 and on sale since the beginning of 2025. If the demand is there, deliveries remain limited. The cause: a labor shortage at the Serbian plant where it is assembled, which is currently idling. A significant logistical obstacle, even though this model is crucial for Fiat.

A hybrid 500, unclear projects and static communication

Fiat still has an important card to play in 2025: the arrival of the Fiat 500 hybrid, scheduled for November. Prototypes have already been spotted on the roadThis model should enable the brand to reconnect with an urban clientele reluctant to buy 100 % electric cars.

But beyond this novelty, the future becomes more foggy. Two major models were expected: the Fiat Giga-Panda (codename F2U) and the European Fiat Fastback (F2X). These two vehicles were to be the focus of a major communication campaign in the summer of 2025, to mark the brand's anniversary on July 11.

And yet, radio silence. Olivier François, usually very present in the media, is keeping a low profile. Expected announcements seem to be on hold, as if frozen. And with good reason: all product plans must now be approved by the new CEO of Stellantis.

Antonio Filosa: the new decider of Fiat's future

Appointed on May 28, Antonio Filosa will officially take office on June 23. Although his appointment follows months of uncertainty about the Group's strategic direction, it is already accompanied by the first visible adjustments. Maserati and Alfa Romeo will have to revise their roadmaps. Fiat, obviously, too.

According to our information, the Giga-Panda (F2U) is still on the drawing board, but production is not scheduled until summer 2026. It is due to roll off the production lines of the Stellantis plant in Kénitra, Morocco. The same goes for the Fiat Fastback (F2X), also scheduled for production in Kénitra in spring 2026... but news of which is becoming increasingly scarce. Worrying silence or strategic reorientation? Only time will tell.

What next?

Beyond these two models, nothing is really clear. All we know is that a new generation of Panda is planned for Pomigliano d'Arco by 2030. Rumors also point to a return of the Multipla name or even the Punto, but with low probability.

Caution now seems to be the order of the day. Communication around the F2U and F2X products has been brought to a halt, as it now depends on Antonio Filosa's decisions. And until he validates the next steps, Fiat will remain on hold.

The future of Italian brands in question

After all, Fiat is not the only one concerned. Alfa Romeo, Maserati, but also Lancia and Abarth could see their product plans modified in the coming months. The next few weeks will therefore be crucial for the future of the Italian brands within Stellantis.

Antonio Filosa now holds the keys to the brand's future. And that future, more than ever, is being called into question.

  1. We're paying for the mistakes of the past, from Tavares, who made nothing but mistakes and permanent disasters, to Imparato for Alfa Romeo, who dared to declare in 2023 that "electric was Alfa Romeo's life insurance". A great visionary, that man! And I'm not talking about the Maserati Folgore, which hardly ever sells.
I can't imagine the sales of the Abarth 500e and 600e.
The electric market is not growing, to the point where all brands are reverting to internal combustion and hybrids.

Fiat 500 Heckklappenabdeckung kein Randleiste! Kofferraumbeläuchtung nicht vorhanden, nur Verkabelung.Sie haben 3cent gespart.

  3. Fiât is paying for the FCA years when the visionary former boss declared that the Punto was useless and that only a 500isee range was valid for the future. The car industry being slow, it's more than 5 years later that the consequences are felt. In short, even Tavares had nothing to do with it. On the contrary, the C3 Panda was his brainchild, and for the moment it's all that's working. I'm sorry, but sales of the 600 are still far from a figure worthy of Fiât.

    • Marchionne has certainly made mistakes, but attributing Fiat's current problems in Europe to him is a bit of an exaggeration. Who made the all-electric mistake? Tavares (Marchionne didn't believe in it). Who was responsible for the collapse of the 500? Tavares and his pricing policy. The Punto? What prevented Stellantis from launching it based on the 208? The current Panda? It's barely out, so we can't give sales figures yet. What's more, while orders are pouring in, the factory isn't keeping up.

    • So yes, Stellantis has his share of responsibility for Fiat's situation in Europe (South America is a different story). In fact, some people are wondering whether this was deliberate.

      • Let's not forget that FIAT is the leading brand in the STELLANTS group even today. It is a major component. Hence the importance of reviewing the strategy

  5. The electric vehicle market is growing, but not at the speed expected: technical and commercial choices were initially very poor. The first half of the year may give the impression of a disappointment in Europe, but not all manufacturers are in the same situation. Just consider that the prices of the 500e and the Elroq are close to each other to understand why. Fiat should make the Grande Panda a huge success if it had the capacity to produce it (and I can understand why, after such industrial choices, Olivier François is keeping a low profile).

  6. We can expect Filosa to relaunch a descendant of the Fiat Tipo that's a real sedan and not some strange C4X / Basalt-style thing like Fiat seemed intent on doing, cf. the strange brown concept car.

  12. Deserting the B-segment (punto), once Fiat's hobbyhorse, is like shooting yourself in the foot, and competitors must have rubbed their hands 😂, then betting everything on electrics to the detriment of internal combustion, only the Italian brands managed by Stellantis have done so, and shot themselves in the other foot. Look no further for the cause of the various Fiat Alfa Maserati and Lancia debacles.
