Alfa Romeo: what range for the next few years?

s COVID-19 passes, the merger between FCA and PSA is closer than ever. The first model to come out of this merger may well be an all-electric SUV. What about the rest of the lineup? Let's take a look at what should be the range Alfa Romeo until 2023 !

Marchionne's 2014 - 2022 product plans on the shelf

It's a far, far cry from the 400,000 sales per year that Sergio Marchionne, former CEO of FCA, promised in 2014. An ambitious product plan consisting of sports cars.

But Alfa Romeo does not have the aura it would like to have in all continents. Sergio Marchionne counted a lot on the USA, or even China...

In short, we will not repeat the story. The Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio have not been as successful as they should have been in China or the US. Europe counted for little. The cash is not coming in, all the models on the roadmap are abandoned: GTV, 6C, 8C, large sedan, etc. This is a certainty.

The Alfa Romeo range lives today with 2 models The Giulia GTA and GTAm, for example, are available in exclusive editions. Probably profitable but inaccessible for the majority.

The Tonale will be the first electrified Alfa Romeo in 2022

What is certain is that the Alfa Romeo Tonale will be the first electrified Alfa Romeo in the range. Small SUVs are selling well. Hybrids are even better. But the price still has to be lowered. But how? Well, contrary to what has been announced for years, the Alfa Romeo range will no longer be developed exclusively on the Giorgio. It will be, as brands in other groups, developed on several platforms of the group FCA and soon, PSA.

This is good timing for the Alfa Romeo Tonale, in the group there is already a new 240 hp Jeep Compass plug-in hybrid.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale will be developed on the same platform as the Jeep CompassIt is available with two engines: MHEV diesel and PHEV 240 hp gasoline. The price will be between 40 000 € and 45 000 € TTC

Electrified Giulia and Stelvio to follow in 2021 / 2022

In their MY20 versions, the Giulia and Stelvio have benefited from a major interior and infotainment upgrade.

However, still nothing on the engine level while hybrid engines have been ready for a while... proof of this is that the future Jeep Wrangler, Cherokkee or Grand Commander will offer the 2.0L 4-cylinder GME PHEV... just like Maserati, which offers 330 hp MHEV 4-cylinders on the Ghibli and Levante, for example.

We will have to wait for the release of the Tonale to hope for  in 2022 (2022 Geneva show ?) to have the electrified versions of the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio.

Don't expect a complete restyling for this occasion, Klaus Busse, the group's design director, has been very clear on the subject, there is no question of making the Giulia and Stelvio look like the Tonale.

Brennero: the all-electric Alfa Romeo SUV with PSA in 2022

The PSA / FCA merger is due to be completed by the end of 2020 and the plans include the technological complementarity between the different brands.

Alfa Romeo had already announced a few months ago that after the C-SUV Tonale, an all-electric B-SUV to be launched in 2022.

This is a good thing, as the rumors of the last few days point to a Alfa Romeo B-SUV which would be based on the PSA eCMP platformThis is the first of its kind in the world, shared with the Peugeot e-2008 and the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense.

Why not after all... The Peugeot e-2008 is offered from 37 400 € TTCThe price would certainly be similar for the Italian B-SUV. Note that, according to a spokesman Alfa Romeo, in order to preserve the sporting DNA of the brand, the electric motor could be more powerful in the Biscione than in the Lyon, currently posted at 136 hp.

For the non-electric version, a starting price of €25,000 including tax is possible. The name regularly mentioned is Brennero.

The all-electric Alfa Romeo Stelvio for 2023?

It's not in Alfa Romeo's 2020 - 2022 product plan but it's a strong possibility.

In 2021, Maserati is scheduled to introduce its baby-levante (D-SUV), available in hybrid and full-electric. This will share the Stelvio platform. It is possible that after the all-electric B-SUV developed with PSA in 2022, Alfa Romeo unveils an all-electric Stelvio in 2023one year after the Maserati model.
