The Lancia Ypsilon HF could be the surprise of 2025, and put a slap in the face of the Alpine a290

Advertising

In May 2024, almost a year before its imminent launch, Lancia unveils the Ypsilon HFa high-performance version of its flagship city car. Now that its release is just around the corner (expected in a few weeks to a few months), it's time to analyze the reasons why this Lancia Ypsilon HF deserves your attention, especially if you're looking for a small electric car that combines performance and driving pleasure.

Figures that make you salivate

At first glance, the Lancia Ypsilon HF could well rival the best in its segment. Indeed, with its 280 hp and weight of 1.5 tons, it far outclasses the Alpine A290 GT Performance, which develops just 220 hp for an equivalent weight of 1,479 kg. In addition to a 51 kWh battery, the Ypsilon HF boasts a 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.8 seconds, far quicker than the A290 GT Performance, which struggles to break the 6.4-second barrier.

The performance gap with the Alpine is impressive, especially when price is taken into account. The Lancia Ypsilon HF could be offered, according to our estimates, at around €44,000, while the A290 GT Performance costs €41,700. This power/price ratio could well make the Ypsilon HF a formidable choice against the competition.

The Lancia Ypsilon HF: a performance/price ratio that makes all the difference

The Lancia Ypsilon HF could well establish itself as a more attractive, higher-performance model than the Alpine A290 GT Performance. Compared with the Alpine, the Ypsilon benefits from a more powerful engine and shorter acceleration time for a similar price. What's more, the Ypsilon HF shares some interesting technical features, such as the 280 hp Emotors M4 electric motor and a limited-slip differential.

Compared with a 280hp Junior Veloce, which shares the same technical specifications, the Ypsilon HF benefits from a low center of gravity and improved aerodynamics, thanks to its urban silhouette. As a result, it's just as efficient, if not more so. than the Junior Veloce, which we already liked a lot during our track test.. Where the Lancia Ypsilon HF could really come into its own is by offering similar performance at a more competitive price.

With a price differential of a few thousand euros between the Alpine A290 GT Performance and the Ypsilon HF, the Lancia option becomes particularly tempting.

What if the heir to the Alfa Romeo 147 GTA was the Lancia Ypsilon HF?

One of the most interesting debates for Italian sports car enthusiasts remains the question of the heir to the legendary Alfa Romeo 147 GTA. Although the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce was seen as a worthy successor by many journalists during testing, it could be that the Lancia Ypsilon HF will take that place with flying colors.

Lighter, more dynamic and possibly faster, the Lancia Ypsilon HF could become the benchmark in its segment.

Expectations are high as the Lancia Ypsilon HF prepares to hit the market in the near future. For Stellantis, the task will be not to be too greedy on price, as this sporty city car could well make waves in the market for small, high-performance electric cars. It has everything it takes to surpass its main competitor, the Alpine A290 GT Performance, and even dethrone it, with a price/performance ratio that could prove irresistible. In any case, time will tell whether this Ypsilon HF will be the real surprise of 2025, but one thing is certain: it has the potential to slap its rivals in the face.

      • Childish answer.

Some find it elegant, others find it unsightly. Having seen it in person (at a dealership), I stand by my opinion.

Everyone has the right to express theirs, even if you don't like it.

    • @Potté I agree with you, it's unfortunately the first thing that comes to mind when I see it. It's a shame, because this version could have been a great advertisement for the brand, but it's the opposite that's going to happen.

      • Indeed, this strategy is incomprehensible. They've already done something baroque with Citroën and DS, with the results that produced, and when Lancia is entrusted to them, they decide to do the same, only worse...

  1. As the proud owner of a 147 gta bought new in 2004, I can't wait for this ypsilon hf to come out. With its 280 hp and torsen differential. According to the Lancia manager I met in Nanterre in early February, it should be available this month or in June.
Like you, I hope the price will be reasonable enough to place an order.
I also hope there will be another interior color other than the bright blue.

Thank you for your articles and have a good trip.

  3. The Lancia Ypsilon HF will outperform the Alpine A290.
In terms of looks, I'm not sure I like the additions on the front fenders, like on the Mini Cooper JCW GP.

  4. Alpine plans to release the A290 in 4WD and 280hp, according to rumors. This would be next year.
I'm not sure the Lancia will remain attractive for long. Stellantis is going to have to communicate a lot about it. The second black mark on its future is the arrival of the 208 GTi electric, which I think will completely overshadow the Lancia's career.

    • Stellantis is no stranger to this: they introduced the Alfa Romeo Tonale to the American market by presenting the cheaper Dodge Hornet with a wider choice of engines. Even if you love Alfa Romeo, you can buy the same car for less, with more interesting engines. As a result, sales of the Tonale plummeted. So it's not even surprising that Stellantis is doing it again, presenting a Peugeot e-208 GTI to sink the Lancia Ypsilon HF.
And yet Tavares is no longer here.

      • It's true that the strategy doesn't look great.
I've just learned from another site that the Junior Veloce will have a new internal competitor. According to a taser freshly revealed by Opel, the Mokka will be entitled to its GSE 280hp version at the end of the year...

      • Tavares may be gone, but it's a safe bet that most of his decisions for the next 5 years have already been made...

We'll have to wait 5 to 10 years to start seeing the concrete transition to the post-Picsou era.

  6. Why Lancia launches in a HF version and in Rallye with a Ypsilon whereas the true queen is the Delta??🤔🤔 The purists wait only for her I think... I have a 1600 turbo of 1992 and I wait only for one thing it is the new delta!!!

    • If the new CEO of Stellantis doesn't change his plans, the Delta will arrive. And having seen the concept, which I'm not allowed to say anything about, it's incredible. It will be unanimously acclaimed.

      • Oh, great news! This could finally be the Guilietta everyone's been waiting for, but under a different label. Can't wait to see the future Gamma either.

        • Having seen both I'm more enthusiastic about Delta (if it respects the concept) than Gamma. But that's all I can say 😬

  7. Von den Daten her ein Konkurrent, von der Optik her nein. Abzuwarten ist auch das Fahrwerk, ob es mit der Alpine konkurrieren kann.

  8. I just saw some on a truck on the freeway.

They were all the same color....... Orange.

It wasn't too bad, but a bit garish.

Apparently, press trials are just around the corner.

    • I can confirm that it won't be long, because I'll be there! Indeed, there's orange but also more classic colors.

  10. Great news, we'll have a good report...

I hope the suspension will be less stiff than the junior's, which for me lacks a little comfort.
