These sketches are not just a simple overview of the car: they also reveal the iconic models that inspired every detail of its design.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the Lancia Ypsilon is the front end. Indeed, these first design proposals reveal a more muscular face, close to the Lancia Ypsilon HFbefore the final model was validated. This bolder design demonstrates the extent to which the Lancia wished infuse this urban model with power and sportinesswhile retaining the brand's signature elegance.
For the rear of the Ypsilon, the inspiration seems obvious: the Lancia Stratoswith its dynamic silhouette, but also the Lancia 037, famous for its role in competition. Interestingly, the designers proposed several versions of the taillights before settling on the current round ones. A decision that was undoubtedly influenced by the heritage of these legendary cars, while ensuring a more modern and harmonious look.
The profile features curves inspired by two iconic models: Lancia Aurelia and Lancia Stratos. These flowing, elegant curves can be found in many Lancia models, such as the Fulvia.
However, it's the front of the car that attracts the most interest. The Y-shaped front lights, which have become the Ypsilon's signature feature, are more than just an aesthetic innovation.. Their origins go back to a much older model: the Lancia Sport Prototipo Zagatoderived from the Lancia Flavia Zagato. On this sports car, a large fan on the front bumper cools the radiator, which is supported by three Y-shaped brackets. This shape inspired the designers of the new Ypsilon. This subtle reference to Lancia's history and the brand's sports cars underlines the desire to combine elegance and performance.
