The accident in Lewis Hamilton during closed-door testing in Barcelona is still the talk of the town. After crashing into the barriers at over 200 km/h on the final bend of the Montmeló circuit, the the seven-time world champion Formula 1 escaped unhurt from the incident. Several Italian media have revealed the precise causes of the crash, which brought the day's testing to a premature end.
A quick turn and a piloting error?
On the second day of testing in Barcelona, Hamilton was driving the Ferrari SF-23 in TPC (Test Previous Car) configuration, a single-seater at least two years old, as permitted by the regulations for private testing. The accident occurred at 11 a.m. in the final corner, a curve which, since the removal of the chicane, is taken at nearly 200 km/h in qualifying.
According to Il Corriere della SeraThe clearance is wide, but the deceleration is very strong. Hamilton lost control and went violently off the track. Ferrari was quick to respond, confirming that the British driver suffered no injuries. However, the car was seriously damaged, particularly the suspension and front aerodynamics.
The runway involved?
According to La Stampaa asphalt unevenness could have been the cause of the loss of control. Sources in Barcelona suggest that Hamilton was taken by surprise by a bump in the circuit. This remains a plausible hypothesis, although the Scuderia Ferrari has not yet published a final technical report.
Testing was disrupted by the accident, preventing Charles Leclerc from driving in the afternoonwhen he was due to take over the SF-23. The team had to concentrate on repairing the car and making the necessary adjustments for the Monegasque. This meant that he was only able to complete two of the four days planned with TPC.
Fortunately, this setback does not call into question Ferrari's program for the days ahead. Hamilton and Leclerc will be back on track next week, again in Barcelona, but this time at the wheel of the SF-24, the Scuderia's new single-seater for the 2024 season.
In the meantime, Antonio Giovinazzi and Dino Beganovic will conclude testing in Montmeló, thus completing three intensive days for the Maranello team.
