Alfa Romeo Tonale: what the Jeep Compass tells us about the Italian SUV due in 2027

The Alfa Romeo Tonale, although launched in 2022, arrives a little out of step with the other models from the Stellantis group. Created by FCA, it is one of the last SUVs to be based on an old platform that does not allow for an electric 100 % version. In 2027, therefore, the Tonale is due for a complete overhaul, and it's highly likely that this future model will borrow much more technology from its Jeep Compass cousin than you might think.

The technological gap of today's Tonale

The current Alfa Romeo Tonale is positioned between the Junior and the Stelvio in the brand's range. It is equipped with engines such as the 1.5L GSE mHEV and the 1.3L GSE PHEV (plug-in hybrid), both of which will no longer be used in European models from the Stellantis group. Its rather old Fiat platform, used for the previous version of the Jeep compass, but also for the Fiat Tipo, Fiat 500X and Fiat 500L, does not allow for a 100 % electric motor.

The Tonale, although it marked the entrance toAlfa Romeo in the world of compact SUVs, to be updated in 2025. But this evolution will only be superficial: no platform revolutions or big changes under the hood. The Tonale, due to arrive in 2027, should reinvent itself, technologically inspired by the all-new Jeep Compass, another Italian-made SUV that is now more modern and versatile.

The future Tonale, inspired by the new Jeep Compass

The Jeep Compass, freshly launched with new technologies, tells us a lot about the future of the Tonale. This new version of the Compass, now based on the STLA Medium platform, brings with it a number of innovations, including electric powertrains.

The new American SUV "made in italy" is available with three options: a 145 hp hybrid powertrain with a 1.2L mHEV engine, a 195 hp plug-in hybrid version with a 1.6L PHEV engine, and two 100 % electric versions. The first, with 213 hp front-wheel drive, offers a range of 500 km, while the second, with all-wheel drive, boasts 375 hp and a range of 650 km.

Prices for the new Compass start at €41,000 for the 145 hp hybrid version, rising to €46,500 for the 213 hp electric version. By comparison, the current Tonale starts at €44,000 for the 160 hp hybrid version, with the plug-in hybrid version rising to €53,300.

These figures give us an idea of the prices to be expected for the future Tonale, and it's very likely that the two SUVs, one under the Jeep brand and the other under Alfa Romeo, will find themselves in very similar segments in terms of powertrains, range and price. The future Tonale could well share the same technical base as the Compass, while boasting similar performance characteristics.

The Tonale of 2027 could therefore inherit the STLA Medium platform and powertrains from the new Jeep. In 2027, the Veloce version of the Tonale could boast 375 hp, surpassing the 280hp Junior Veloce. This increase in power is consistent with the brand's direction. On the downside, in our opinion, the 1.2L 145 hp was already limited in terms of power on the Junior, and should be offered with more power on the next Tonale.

It's worth bearing in mind, however, that 2027 is still a long way off, and Alfa Romeo still has a number of stages to go before reaching this new Tonale.

Alfa Romeo calendar

Before the complete renewal of the Tonale, Alfa Romeo must first concentrate on several other projects. At the end of 2025, the brand will present the new Stelvio, a D-SUV that will replace the current model, before going on sale in 2026. In that year, Alfa Romeo is also expected to unveil and launch the new Giulia, which could well be the model that precedes the launch of the next-generation Tonale.

2027 is still a long way off, but the clues are already there. Another hypothesis was the arrival of an Alfa Romeo E-SUV in 2027. But the economic situation suggests that the brand would take less risk in renewing a European C-SUV model first, than an E-SUV normally aimed at the North American and Chinese markets. 3 opinions on "Alfa Romeo Tonale: what the Jeep Compass tells us about the Italian SUV arriving in 2027"

  1. Given the Tonale's greater weight compared to the Junior, fitting a 145 hp hybrid engine is ridiculous. The current 160 hp engine is already a bit tight...

    • We'll have to see how the Jeep Compass performs with the 145 hp, but it seems very light to me. As much as the Ypsilon does the job, in the Junior it's already borderline for an Alfa Romeo.

  2. Basically it will be a disguised Peugeot since the platform and engines are both PSA. The current Tonale is at least based on FCA.
