See a Ferrari F40 In a supermarket parking lot, that’s already quite a sight. But when it’s equipped with a roof-mounted bike rack holding an old mountain bike securely fastened, the scene becomes downright surreal. Yet that’s exactly what several internet users discovered a few days ago, after photos were posted on Reddit. Many immediately thought it was a replica, given how improbable the image seemed. And yet, this F40 is the real deal… and its story is even more astonishing than its cargo.
An F40 well known among enthusiasts
Research quickly identifies this Ferrari. It currently belongs to Amir Rosenbaum, an American who has owned this 1992 F40 since 1995. In a recent interview with the YouTube channel Gas and Go, he says he spotted the ad in the magazine AutoWeek before discovering that the seller was going through a particularly difficult time. After six months of negotiations, he finally managed to buy the car, which he has owned for nearly thirty years.
Unlike many F40s kept as collector’s items, this one has seen action. Its owner extensively modified it for hill climb racing, including a racing brake system, specialized suspension, larger wheels, and engine tuning. He even entered it at Bonneville, where it reached over 220 mph (354 km/h) on the salt flats. And, as he himself humorously puts it, he also sometimes… uses it to run errands.
The F40 that beat the RUFs
The most notable event in this Ferrari’s history, however, dates back to 2002. That year, Amir Rosenbaum competed in the Virginia City Hillclimb in Nevada. This 5.2-mile (8.4-km) climb follows Highway 341, which was closed for the event, and features about twenty turns.
For several years, the race had been dominated by a spectacular all-wheel-drive RUF CTR2 producing about 520 ch. Its best lap time was around 3 min 12 s. At the wheel of his Ferrari F40, Amir Rosenbaum clocked a time of 3 min 10 s, setting a new all-time record for the event. Behind him, Mike Horzewski finished in a Dodge Viper GTS with a time of 3 min 15 s.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect is the longevity of this record. It wasn’t until 2019 that a Porsche 911 GT2 RS slightly improved the time to 3:09.4, thus ending nearly two decades of F40 dominance. The record was then broken once again in 2021—again by a GT2 RS—which clocked a time of 3:06, a mark that remains the most recent confirmed record.
