At 45 years old, this Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 «coda tronca» continues to turn heads and bring a smile to its driver’s face. Guillaume, a member of the Italpassion community, has owned a 1981 model for three years. After driving it for 4,000 kilometers, he shares his impressions, his minor mechanical issues, and the reasons why this Italian convertible remains so endearing.

There are cars we choose for their performance, others for their comfort or versatility. And then there are those we buy first and foremost with our hearts. The’Alfa Romeo Spider undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. Guillaume is a prime example. After having owned, among other things, a Alfa Romeo Giulietta and a Alfa Romeo 156, as well as several French models and a Ford Mondeo, he decided to return to the Biscione brand by treating himself to a 1981 Spider 2000.

A black convertible with a beige interior, a matching soft top, chrome trim, and a wooden steering wheel. A car that seems straight out of another era and that, nearly 45 years after it was first registered, still retains a special charm. And Guillaume didn’t just admire it in his garage. Over the course of three years, he drove it 4,000 kilometers. That was enough to get a first impression of its strengths—but also its weaknesses.

A 130 ch engine that still puts a smile on your face

On paper, the 130 ch originally advertised for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine might seem modest today. But weighing less than a metric ton, according to Guillaume, this Alfa Romeo Spider doesn’t need excessive power to be fun to drive. In fact, that’s one of the first qualities its owner highlights: the engine’s responsiveness, capable of accelerating effortlessly even at low RPMs.

«Originally a 130 ch engine for a car weighing less than 1,000 kg… You can cruise at 60 km/h in fifth gear, press the gas pedal, and it picks up speed right away.»

This flexibility lets you relax and enjoy the scenery without having to constantly fiddle with the gearshift. But when the road gets winding, the Spider also knows how to show its spirited side. The manual transmission adds to this experience. Guillaume appreciates its large, well-positioned shifter, as well as the speed and precision of the gear changes. However, not everything is perfect.

«The large shifter is easy to reach; shifting is quick and fairly precise. The second gear is a bit stiff, and reverse skips occasionally.»

These are very real issues that would warrant mechanical attention, but they don’t seem to detract from the driving pleasure. The sound is also an important part of the experience. Guillaume describes a nice, sporty sound, even though the exhaust manifold needs to be replaced, which currently makes the car a little too loud.

It’s ultimately on small country roads that this Alfa Romeo really comes into its own.

«A drive I really enjoy along a small, winding country road! As long as we stick to the speed limits but have a little fun, a smile immediately spreads across our faces.»

That’s probably the best way to sum up this Italian engineering: it doesn’t seek to impress with numbers, but rather to provide accessible driving experiences.

Enjoyable handling, despite its age

An Alfa Romeo wouldn’t be quite an Alfa Romeo without a chassis capable of delivering driving pleasure. And in this regard, Guillaume’s Spider has a lot going for it. Its very low ride height and precise front-end handling allow it to tackle corners with confidence. The owner particularly notes the lack of noticeable body roll.

«No body roll (very low-slung car) and the front end is quite precise.»

The steering also has a very distinctive feel. With its large wooden steering wheel, it’s sufficiently responsive and precise once in motion. On the other hand, maneuvering at low speeds requires more effort. This contrast is an immediate reminder that you’re behind the wheel of a classic car, a far cry from the heavily power-assisted steering found in modern models.

As for the suspension, the rough roads also highlight the vehicle’s age. Guillaume notices some bouncing and noises coming from the body when the road surface deteriorates. He sums it up with a touch of humor:

«On rough roads, the suspension bounces a little and the body scrapes the ground a bit (the grandmother is 45 years old).»

The braking system, on the other hand, receives very positive reviews. Guillaume finds it effective and, above all, easy to modulate—a reassuring quality that allows you to enjoy your rides with peace of mind.

On board, the charm of the past and a few signs of wear and tear

The interior of this Alfa Romeo Spider is an invitation to take a trip back in time. The black dashboard, round gauges, three central instruments, and large steering wheel with a wooden rim create a quintessentially Italian atmosphere. The beige seats and door panels add an extra touch of elegance.

An interior that prioritizes driving pleasure over an abundance of features. Despite its age, the interior seems to have held up rather well over the decades. Guillaume thinks the plastics and faux leather have aged well, although a thorough cleaning would do them some good.

The comfort of the seats is also considered satisfactory, with some reservations.

«Comfortable seat (you'll want to bring a cushion); the headrest is a little low for people who are 1 meter 80 tall.»

So you have to make do with vintage ergonomics and a few elements that could use a refresh. But this simplicity is also part of the Spider’s appeal. Here, there’s no large central screen or menus to navigate to adjust the car’s settings. Everything you need is right in front of you and within easy reach. The driver enjoys a direct connection with the car’s mechanics, free from the distractions of modern cockpits.

12 liters per 100 km: pleasure comes at a price

Owning an Alfa Romeo Spider of this generation also means accepting certain trade-offs, starting with fuel consumption. Guillaume reports an average of 12 liters per 100 kilometers, a figure he gets both in the city and on the highway at 130 km/h.

Advertising

Obviously, this isn't a car designed to break fuel-efficiency records. But since it's used mainly on weekends, this fuel consumption is one of the compromises the owner is willing to accept.

In terms of reliability, Guillaume notes an issue with the fuel system: the fuel pump can run dry when the vehicle remains stationary for an extended period. This is something to keep an eye on, as are the exhaust manifold, second gear—which can be rough—and reverse gear, which occasionally slips.

These details show that his Spider isn't without its minor repairs. But after driving 4,000 kilometers over three years, Guillaume seems to focus above all on the enjoyment his convertible brings him.

Why choose this Alfa Romeo over a BMW Z3?

When it came time to choose a fun convertible, Guillaume had also considered a BMW Z3. It was an interesting alternative, but in the end, it couldn’t compete with his love for Italian cars.

«My love for Italian women tipped the scales.»

This choice speaks volumes about what the Alfa Romeo Spider means to its enthusiasts. Beyond its performance, handling, and features, it has a personality that numbers can’t truly capture.

With its sleek silhouette, long hood, round headlights, and open-air cabin, it embodies a certain idea of driving pleasure. It’s the kind of car you take out to enjoy a beautiful day, drive down a country road, or simply savor the sound of the engine.

When asked what gives his Alfa Romeo that extra touch of soul, Guillaume comes up with a particularly apt description:

«The term «dolce vita» was practically invented for this car.»

It's hard to sum up the spirit of this convertible any better.

Italian Spirit Score: 17/20

Verdict: An imperfect Alfa Romeo, but one that’s incredibly endearing

After three years and 4,000 kilometers, Guillaume shares his experience, which vividly illustrates the joys and challenges of owning a classic Alfa Romeo. His Spider 2000 isn’t perfect. The transmission can be a bit finicky, the suspension can feel a bit bouncy on rough roads, fuel consumption remains high, and several mechanical repairs are to be expected.

But despite these flaws, there’s that smooth and responsive engine, that responsive steering, that timeless design, and above all, that ability to turn a simple drive into a truly enjoyable experience.

With an overall score of 74.8 out of 100, Guillaume isn't trying to portray his Alfa Romeo as a flawless car. On the contrary, his story shows that it's possible to be fully aware of your car's flaws and love it just as much.

And perhaps that’s the magic of an Alfa Romeo Spider: nearly 45 years after rolling off the assembly line, it still manages to put a smile on its driver’s face on a small country road.
