The Italian automotive industry is always in the news. This visit is part of advanced discussions between Dongfeng and local authorities to potentially set up a new production line in Italy.

A major player about to enter the Italian market

Dongfeng Motor Corporation, one of China's top three automakers, is no stranger to the European market. This group, which was once a strategic partner of PSA Peugeotalready has some experience of transnational collaborations. An opportunity for the Turin region?

The Piedmont region, and more specifically Turin, has historically been linked to the automotive industry, with iconic plants such as Mirafiori. In recent years, however, the sector has faced significant challenges, with declining production and temporary plant closures. The potential arrival of Dongfeng could represent, depending on one's opinion, an opportunity to revitalize the local economy.

Andrea Tronzano, Regional Manager, Productive Activities, confirmed Dongfeng's interest in the region. "We have proposed two or three sites in the Turin area, which they will probably visit next week. Then they'll choose, as Silicon Box did," he said. The former Maserati factory, still for saleis probably on the list.

If Dongfeng decides to set up in the Turin region, it could have major repercussions for Stellantis. The European automaker, which is experiencing difficulties in Italy with a significant drop in production, could find itself facing a major new competitor, who will will be a factor in future negotiations with the Italian government.

Dongfeng's visit next week will be decisive. If the Chinese manufacturer decides to set up shop, it could mark the beginning of a new era for the Turin region, with significant foreign investment and the creation of new jobs. But this will only be possible if conditions imposed by the Minister for Made in Italy.
