While the new Stelvio was initially expected to be launched in 2025 and marketed in 2026, the product plan forAlfa Romeo is currently undergoing a major overhaul. At Stellantis, schedules are changing, priorities are shifting, and arbitrations between platforms and powertrains are influencing deadlines. Here's what the Biscione brand's new product plan for the period 2025 - 2029 might look like, according to unofficial information we've been able to gather.
2025: a smooth transition
First step: the Tonale restyling. Expected in September 2025, this will be an essentially cosmetic update of the compact SUV launched in 2022. No technological revolution is in store, but an update, no doubt to accompany an expanded engine range. We're talking about 4 versions, new interiors with more color, new exterior colors, and the mhev 160 hp engine will be upgraded to 175 hp.
2026: a surprise model: the completely redesigned Tonale approaches
2026 could well hold a surprise. We have exclusively revealed the existence of a new model in the pipeline for that year. This would be the all-new Tonale. Originally scheduled for launch in September 2027, it could be unveiled as early as 2026. This time, it will be a complete redesign based on the STLA Medium platform, with an expanded powertrain range: simple hybrids (HEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), but also 100 % electrics (BEV). In terms of design, it will be a cousin of the Peugeot 3008 and Jeep Compass, and we're talking about a fastback SUV.
2027: the Giulia 2
In 2027, it's the Giulia sedan's turn for a makeover. But don't call it a sedan any more: this new generation will adopt a slightly raised, fastback styling, in line with the current trend for Stellantis (and above all, probably to make room for a large battery). It will be based on the STLA Large platform, produced in Cassino, and should benefit from the Group's most powerful engines, namely the 1.6L and 2.0L blocks in their various electrified variants, in addition to 100 % electric engines. And remember, it will have a side license plate.
2028: the Stelvio 2, at last
Postponed several times, the new Stelvio could finally arrive in 2028. It too will be based on the STLA Large platform and manufactured in Cassino. It will be slightly longer than the current Stelvio, and will be a premium, top-of-the-range D-SUV. It will offer a full range of electrified powertrains, from HEV to BEV.
2029: back to compact cars, made in Pomigliano
Alfa Romeo has no intention of abandoning the C-segment. A compact model, which could be called Alfetta or Giulietta, would arrive in 2029. Produced at Pomigliano d'Arco, this C-crossover will be based on a lengthened version of the STLA Small platform, to compete with a certain Cupra Formentor, Italian-style of course.
An American incursion?
At the top end of the range, an E-SUV project is still in the works. Unofficially called the E-Jet, this large crossover could be produced in the USA at a Stellantis plant (because of customs duties). Its STLA Large platform would offer both powerful powertrains and a comfortable electric range. If it were to coexist with the future Stelvio, this E-jet would be 4.9 meters long.
A five-model range and a multi-energy strategy
By 2029, Alfa Romeo could have five main models on the European market:
Segment | Model | Year | Platform | Plant |
---|---|---|---|---|
B-SUV | Alfa Romeo Junior (966) | 2024 | PSA eCMP | Tychy (Poland) |
C-SUV | Alfa Romeo Tonale (A4U) | 2026 | STLA Medium | Melfi (Italy) |
D-Crossover | Alfa Romeo Gulia (A5S) | 2027 | STLA Large | Cassino (Italy) |
D-SUV | Alfa Romeo Stelvio (A5U) | 2028 | STLA Large | Cassino (Italy) |
C-Crossover | Alfa Romeo Alfetta/Giulietta (A2X) | 2029 | STLA Small | Pomigliano d'Arco (Italy) |
To this could be added a sixth, larger model, produced in the USA.
Stellantis now intends to make HEV, PHEV and BEV powertrains available on all models, with 1.2L and 1.6L engines on the STLA Small and Medium platforms, and 1.6L and 2.0L on the STLA Large. A multi-energy approach designed to meet the needs of all markets and regulations, from Europe to the USA.
I think there is very little change of a Tonale restyling this year & then a new model next year, doesn't make financial sense, and would seem to be a waste of money on the part of Stellantis. Either there will be a restyle this year, or a new model next year, but not both.
Unless the Tonale 2 is no longer called Tonale... given that it is slightly larger than the current model and has a fastback design.
I've read the whole thing, and absolutely nothing makes me want to do it.
What do other Alfisti think?
I don't see the difference between a suv and a crossover.
So this time it's 100% suv, still exactly the opposite of what customers expect.
Take what is published on this site with a lot of skepticism. It's like celebrity gossip for cars. Half of what they put out is made up.
Thank you for these heartfelt words, which are a reward for our work.
Nothing but SUVs or crossovers... Great... I was also thinking that there was a lack of them in the current car market...
It's a shame they're not planning a classic compact model, as this is a sector that's still doing quite well in Europe. We'll have to take a look at the competition...
Oops I didn't mean to reply Alexandre, I was posting a separate comment :/.
Ahah no worries I had understood 😉
No "classic" 3-volume model ...... No coupe or cabriolet !!!!! Alfa is a low-level generalist! Sadly, it's only a matter of time before the superb, high-performance, multi-valve, double ACT engines are abandoned, a step that Stellantis will happily take! Soon, all you'll see is a "biscione" medallion on a plain hood!
The cross over disaster is about accurate as per the Stellantis agenda. Proof the problem wasn't Carlos Tevares alone.
I'll just have to buy Korean now. Seems like Europeans are more confused than Americans when it comes to making cars
For God's sake, sell Alfa Romeo to Ferrari or BMW or whoever, who will certainly restore this prestigious brand to its former glory.
Aie aie aie, no more low-slung sedans or compacts, just SUVs, crossovers and fastbacks. And are the engines PureTech or 1.6 from Peugeot?
It's hopeless if this program is confirmed.
All that's left is to keep the Alfa Romeo models that have ceased or will cease production, such as the current Giulia, or else look with regret to the competition.
Oh yes, we're going with good old-fashioned SUVs! A sad end for Alfa
I find it shocking that a brand like Alfa Romeo must be based on a Peugeot (Junior & now Tonale) plus they have the Peugeot 1.2 3 cylinder engine which has had so many recalls plus customers taking them to task due to the engines poor build quality / design - I am so saddened how they, Stellantis, have bastardised this once great brand - then Stellantis have released this Junior Peugeot in South Africa which hardly has an infrastructure for electric vehicles - I live some 400km form the nearest point.
