321,000 km in her Alfa Romeo 4C: it’s probably the car with the highest mileage in the world

When we talk about a Alfa Romeo 4C, ...one might imagine a weekend sports car, carefully tucked away in a garage and covering only a few thousand kilometers a year. However, a photo posted on a forum dedicated to the 4C completely overturns that notion.

In this photo from December 2022, the odometer reads 321,923 kilometers. It’s a hard-to-believe figure for such a radical car, produced between 2013 and 2020, and one that could very well make this Alfa Romeo 4C the one with the highest mileage in the world.

A sports car designed for fun, not for high mileage

With its carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, its 240 ch 1.75 TBi engine mounted in a mid-rear position, and a weight of less than 900 kg, the Alfa Romeo 4C has always been marketed as a car for enthusiasts. Its design is more reminiscent of Lotus cars than modern sports cars packed with electronic aids.

With a starting price of nearly €60,000, a minimalist interior, and very direct handling, it wasn’t really designed for daily commuting. Yet some owners seem to have decided to use their 4C as a true everyday car.

The first forum thread dedicated to high mileage dates back to 2018. At the time, an American owner explained that he was already using his 4C Spider as his daily driver, with over 46,000 miles on the odometer—about 75,000 kilometers. He stated that he had not encountered any major problems beyond routine maintenance.

Before this discovery, the record recognized by the community was a French Alfa Romeo 4C that had clocked nearly 250,000 kilometers. The news had even made its way across the Atlantic, as another discussion thread there referred to it directly.

Several owners have since shared their own figures: 94,500 miles for a U.S.-spec 4C Spider—about 152,000 kilometers—and more than 106,000 miles for a Launch Edition driven on a racetrack—about 170,000 km.

But the photograph published in late 2022 takes things to a whole new level. With its 321,923 kilometers, this 4C far surpasses all other cars known to the community.

A demonstration of reliability?

The story is all the more interesting given that the 4C might suffer from a reputation as a demanding or fragile car. However, owner reviews often tell a different story. In various forum discussions, several owners mention excellent mechanical reliability, with some noting only clutch replacements or routine maintenance. Others point out that the car remains just as addictive after tens of thousands of kilometers as it was on the first day.

Unfortunately, the complete history of this Alfa Romeo with 321,000 km on the odometer remains a mystery. We don’t know its country of origin, its owner, or whether any repairs were made during its lifetime. This example demonstrates that an Italian carbon-fiber sports car can also become a true long-distance cruiser. And to date, it is likely the 4C with the highest mileage in the world.
