No final dos anos 80, a crescente mediatiza\u00e7\u00e3o da disciplina, o ambiente dos \u201canos do dinheiro\u201d e os or\u00e7amentos ainda aceit\u00e1veis levaram muitos aventureiros a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/pt\/concurso\/formula-1\/\">F1<\/a>. Antes da crise do in\u00edcio dos anos 90, o dinheiro dos patroc\u00ednios j\u00e1 flu\u00eda, o que deu origem a numerosos projectos de diferentes graus de loucura. A It\u00e1lia, onde se encontram muitos dos artes\u00e3os da corrida, n\u00e3o ficou atr\u00e1s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">O projeto de uma vida: Rocchi e o W12<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>O projeto \u00abLife\u00bb tem as suas ra\u00edzes em Franco Rocchi, um engenheiro que come\u00e7ou na Ferrari no final dos anos 50 a trabalhar com Aur\u00e9lio Lampredi. Por volta de 1967, trabalhou num projeto de motor W18, antes de participar, juntamente com Mauro Forghieri, na conce\u00e7\u00e3o dos motores Tipo B12 que equiparam os vitoriosos 312T de Niki Lauda. Enfraquecido por problemas de sa\u00fade, Rocchi deixou a Scuderia Ferrari no final dos anos 70 e criou o seu pr\u00f3prio gabinete de design para continuar o seu trabalho nos motores W, enquanto se dedicava \u00e0 pintura!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ap\u00f3s a reforma de 1987 dos monolugares, que aumentou a sua dist\u00e2ncia entre eixos, Rocchi estava convencido de que a arquitetura em W era a solu\u00e7\u00e3o para o problema do espa\u00e7o. O regresso dos motores de aspira\u00e7\u00e3o natural, previsto para 1989, foi a confirma\u00e7\u00e3o de que o seu sonho podia tornar-se realidade: conceber um motor W12 e vend\u00ea-lo a quem o quisesse! O engenheiro convenceu o empres\u00e1rio e magnata do sector imobili\u00e1rio Ernesto Vita a financiar a conce\u00e7\u00e3o do motor. Vita comprou os direitos do W12, que funcionou no banco de ensaios em 1989. O motor era um W12 de 3,5 litros com 60\u00b0 de cilindrada, com uma pot\u00eancia de 650 cv \u00e0s 12.500 rpm. A sua principal vantagem \u00e9 a sua compacidade, com apenas 530 mm de comprimento contra 710 mm de um Cosworth V8. As equipas mais pequenas preferem recorrer a fabricantes de motores de renome como a Judd. Mas os dois homens decidiram criar a sua pr\u00f3pria equipa! Lan\u00e7ada de raiz, chama-se Life, a tradu\u00e7\u00e3o inglesa de \u201cVita\u201d, o nome do fundador! Para o chassis, a Life recorreu \u00e0 pequena equipa First Racing de Lamberto Leoni. Nascida da F3000, esta estrutura n\u00e3o tinha conseguido entrar na F1 para a \u00e9poca de 1989 com o seu pr\u00f3prio carro. Desenvolvido com base num F3000 March, o carro da First Racing n\u00e3o passou no teste de colis\u00e3o da FIA e o seu casco comp\u00f3sito estava demasiado cozinhado! Um engenheiro chegou mesmo a dizer que era ideal para ser utilizado como \u201cvaso de flores\u201d. No entanto, o L190, inspirado nos carros de casco estreito da March e da Benetton, parecia t\u00e3o perigoso de conduzir como o chumbado First: tinha entradas de ar muito pequenas de cada lado do cockpit, ao n\u00edvel dos ombros do condutor, deixando-o exposto a choques. Parece-se muito mais com um F3000 ajustado para acomodar um W12 do que com um verdadeiro carro de F1. Durante os primeiros testes em Misano, o projetista Richard Divila alertou Ernesto Vita para os perigos de conduzir um monolugar destes a mais de 220 km\/h: o casco em comp\u00f3sito de carbono n\u00e3o passava de \u00abpapel de seda\u00bb e a suspens\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m era fr\u00e1gil. O motor W12 \u00abin-house\u00bb era catastroficamente ineficiente e fr\u00e1gil como vidro. Problemas mec\u00e2nicos repetidos impediam o monolugar de completar mais de 2 ou 3 voltas seguidas, resultando em tempos de volta dignos de um carro de F\u00f3rmula Ford e de gozo por parte do paddock. A equipa tamb\u00e9m era amadora: o pessoal apareceu em Phoenix para a abertura da \u00e9poca com apenas 6 pessoas, um computador port\u00e1til e algumas caixas de ferramentas como equipamento. O primeiro piloto da equipa, Gary Brabham, queixou-se de que os mec\u00e2nicos n\u00e3o tinham um man\u00f3metro para verificar a press\u00e3o dos pneus. Pior ainda, os fr\u00e1geis e resistentes monolugares Life estavam a funcionar sem pe\u00e7as sobresselentes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-3.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-3-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-3-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Gary Brabham fez um tempo de pr\u00e9-qualifica\u00e7\u00e3o de 2 min 7 s em Phoenix, a 38 segundos da pole e 34 segundos atr\u00e1s do \u00faltimo classificado. A velocidade m\u00e1xima foi de 185 km\/h, em compara\u00e7\u00e3o com os 271 km\/h do Lotus com motor Lamborghini de Warwick. Na segunda corrida, no Brasil, Brabham percorreu apenas 400 metros. O australiano soube que os mec\u00e2nicos estavam em \u00abgreve\u00bb e que n\u00e3o tinham preparado deliberadamente o seu carro (sem \u00f3leo ou l\u00edquido dos trav\u00f5es), porque ele tinha anunciado a sua sa\u00edda da equipa!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Algo novo no Leste!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rapidamente sem dinheiro, Ernesto Vita recorre a novos acionistas e recebe o apoio da empresa sovi\u00e9tica PIC, um cons\u00f3rcio sovi\u00e9tico com sede em Leninegrado, especializado em armas de alta tecnologia, na ind\u00fastria aeroespacial e na subcontrata\u00e7\u00e3o da manuten\u00e7\u00e3o de submarinos nucleares. E isto \u00e9 apenas o come\u00e7o!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Guerra Fria acabou e a Cortina de Ferro est\u00e1 a abrir-se! A Pilowski I.C. prometeu um or\u00e7amento de 20 milh\u00f5es de d\u00f3lares e o fornecimento de materiais especiais, como tit\u00e2nio e pe\u00e7as de carro\u00e7aria em fibra de carbono.  Isto \u00e9 um aug\u00fario de novas ambi\u00e7\u00f5es para a equipa, que planeia construir um segundo monolugar. Como cereja no topo do bolo, a bandeira sovi\u00e9tica est\u00e1 estampada (em letras pequenas) no cockpit vermelho do monolugar, juntamente com as palavras USSR (URSS em ingl\u00eas)!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-f1-ussr.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-f1-ussr.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-f1-ussr-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-f1-ussr-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-f1-ussr-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Registo lento<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No Grande Pr\u00e9mio de Saint-Marin, a terceira corrida da \u00e9poca, foi Bruno Giacomelli, antigo piloto da Alfa Romeo, que se viu ao volante. Completou uma \u00fanica volta a uma velocidade m\u00e1xima de 104 km\/h (Riccardo Patrese atingiu 313 km\/h), durante a qual partiu as correias da bomba de \u00f3leo e da bomba de \u00e1gua. Foi-lhe atribu\u00eddo um tempo de 7 min 16 s, enquanto o \u00faltimo piloto n\u00e3o pr\u00e9-qualificado registou 1 min 34 s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-4.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-4-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/life-190-4-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>No M\u00f3naco, Giacomelli fez uma volta de 1 min 41 s (com uma velocidade m\u00e1xima de 213 km\/h contra 272 de Ayrton Senna), compar\u00e1vel \u00e0 de um carro de F\u00f3rmula 3. A curva de pot\u00eancia do W12 cai acima das 9.000 rpm, e a raz\u00e3o para limitar as rota\u00e7\u00f5es do motor era evitar que este avariasse repetidamente devido \u00e0 falta de pe\u00e7as sobressalentes. Bruno Giacomelli revelaria mais tarde que o motor pesava cerca de 200 quilos e produzia menos de 400 cv por raz\u00f5es de fiabilidade!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ap\u00f3s doze pr\u00e9-qualifica\u00e7\u00f5es sem sucesso, Life abandonou o Rocchi W12 e entrou em Portugal com um Judd V8, que acabou por comprar \u00e0 Leyton House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O chassis, a carro\u00e7aria e os pontos de montagem do motor tiveram de ser modificados. O amadorismo de Giacomelli torna-se ainda mais evidente aquando da montagem final do motor: o capot original n\u00e3o cabia no novo motor Judd V8! Giacomelli tentou completar uma volta de teste, mas o capot modificado voou ap\u00f3s alguns quil\u00f3metros. Como o carro estava em risco de perder a pr\u00e9-qualifica\u00e7\u00e3o, Life foi multado em 200.000 d\u00f3lares pela FIA. Giacomelli subiu ent\u00e3o para o monolugar, que foi empurrado para as boxes. Gra\u00e7as ao ligeiro declive da via das boxes, o carro p\u00f4de rodar livremente durante algumas centenas de metros: oficialmente, a equipa tinha aparecido no in\u00edcio da sess\u00e3o de pr\u00e9-qualifica\u00e7\u00e3o, evitando assim a multa. No entanto, Life n\u00e3o fez a dispendiosa viagem para competir nas duas \u00faltimas rondas da \u00e9poca, realizadas no Jap\u00e3o e na Austr\u00e1lia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A vida \u00e9 a vida!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ernesto Vita esperava continuar o desenvolvimento do motor W12, mas o dinheiro prometido nunca chegou. A Pilowski I.C. n\u00e3o tinha pago um \u00fanico d\u00f3lar \u00e0 Life em 1990 e nunca honraria o seu contrato. Vita acaba por aceitar o fim da aventura na F1, uma vez que o Life-Rocchi W12 n\u00e3o encontrou comprador devido ao seu fraco desempenho. No final da \u00e9poca, a empresa fecha definitivamente as portas. Bruno Giacomelli, que n\u00e3o recebeu qualquer sal\u00e1rio, declarou \u00e0 imprensa: \u00abTalvez devesse ter levado um motor ou mesmo o carro inteiro como compensa\u00e7\u00e3o quando a equipa faliu...
