Foto Nicolas Anderbergani voor Italpassion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>De Grand Prix, die vanaf 1934 werd bestuurd door de Formule 750 (gewicht 750 kilo en vrije cilinderinhoud) en vanaf 1938 door de Formule 3 liter, werd gedomineerd door de Duitse teams Mercedes en Auto-union. Moe van deze suprematie stapten de Italianen in 1938 over naar de categorie kleine auto's, waar de motorinhoud werd beperkt tot 1.500 cc met supercharger. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/nl\/alfa-romeo\/\">Alfa Romeo<\/a> ontwikkelt de 158 en <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/nl\/maserati\/\">Maserati<\/a> antwoord met de 4CL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maserati ontwierp een nieuwe viercilinder lijnmotor die 30 tot 50 pk meer ontwikkelde dan de vorige zescilinder lijnmotor dankzij een groter aantal kleppen (nu vier per cilinder), het gebruik van een krachtigere compressor en een lichte verhoging van de compressieverhouding. Geheel volgens Maserati-traditie werd de motor gemonteerd op het chassis van een eerder model, de Maserati 6CM. Foto Nicolas Anderbergani voor Italpassion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hoewel de wielbasis bijna identiek was aan die van de Maserati 6CM, had de 4CL een 5 cm bredere spoorbreedte en was hij verlaagd dankzij de herpositionering van de schokdemperveerbevestigingen. Dit traditionele chassis werd bekleed met een lage carrosserie van lichtmetalen panelen, ook geproduceerd door Maserati. Maserati produceerde ook een aerodynamische versie van de 4CL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Maserati 4CL tijdens Grand Prix Monaco Historic 2026\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Exvebe3MUhc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vernedering in Tripoli, maar een gelukkige naoorlogse periode<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>De aerodynamische versie van de 4CL, bestuurd door Luigi Villoresi, pakte de poleposition bij zijn eerste optreden tijdens de Grand Prix van Tripoli in 1939, op het Melhalla-circuit dat de Italianen in hun kolonie hadden aangelegd. En ja, de Duitsers hadden tijd gehad om te reageren op de beslissing van de Italianen om de Grand Prix van Tripoli te beperken tot kleine auto's, een omweg om de Duitse machines te verdringen. Mercedes ontwikkelde deze W165 in slechts 7 maanden, een soort verkleinde versie van de formidabele W125.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tijdens de race moesten twee van de drie Maserati's opgeven vanwege motorproblemen, waardoor de Mercedes-Benz de race won. De overwinning kwam echter twee Grands Prix later, tijdens de Grand Prix van Napels, met privateer John Peter Wakefield aan het stuur. Luigi Villoresi leidde de 4CL naar de overwinning in de editie van 1940 van de Targa Florio. De 4CL was een van de beste auto's van de late jaren 1940 en Luigi Villoresi won opnieuw de Grand Prix de Nice van 1946. De 4CL evolueerde vervolgens tot de 4CLT met een buizenchassis en nam deel aan de eerste seizoenen van het Formule 1-kampioenschap, maar Alfa Romeo en Ferrari waren hem voor wat betreft prestaties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Slechts \u00e9\u00e9n bocht verwijderd!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>De 4CL is er altijd in de historische racerij. De A1 Series, een toevluchtsoord voor vooroorlogse pioniers, kende een wreed einde voor Richard Bradley. De Britse coureur was keizerlijk achter het stuur van zijn No. 30 Maserati 4CL, die in 1939-40 werd bestuurd door Giovanni Rocco en daarna in 1946 door de Fransman Robert Mazaud, onder andere tijdens de Grand Prix van Marseille. Bradley domineerde de race van start tot finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In de laatste ronde, bij het uitkomen van de Rascasse, met alleen nog de Anthony Nogu\u00e8s-bocht te nemen, stond hij op het punt de eer te pakken toen een mechanisch probleem zijn motor plotseling tot stilstand bracht! Het was een vreselijke teleurstelling, waarvan zijn achtervolger Patrick Blakeney-Edwards profiteerde. Met zijn Frazer-Nash Monoplace nr. 42 pleegde hij de roof van het jaar.
