Foto Nicolas Anderbergani para Italpassion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>El Gran Premio, regido desde 1934 por la F\u00f3rmula 750 (peso 750 kilos y cilindrada libre) y desde 1938 por la F\u00f3rmula 3 litros, estaba dominado por las escuder\u00edas alemanas Mercedes y Auto-union. Cansados de esta supremac\u00eda, los italianos se pasaron a la categor\u00eda de coches peque\u00f1os en 1938, en la que la cilindrada estaba limitada a 1.500cc con sobrealimentaci\u00f3n. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/es\/alfa-romeo\/\">Alfa Romeo<\/a> desarrolla las 158 y <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/es\/maserati\/\">Maserati<\/a> responda con el 4CL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maserati dise\u00f1\u00f3 un nuevo motor de cuatro cilindros en l\u00ednea, que desarrollaba entre 30 y 50 CV m\u00e1s que el anterior de seis cilindros en l\u00ednea gracias a un mayor n\u00famero de v\u00e1lvulas (ahora cuatro por cilindro), al uso de un compresor m\u00e1s potente y a un ligero aumento de la relaci\u00f3n de compresi\u00f3n. Siguiendo la tradici\u00f3n de Maserati, el motor se mont\u00f3 sobre el chasis de un modelo anterior, el Maserati 6CM. Foto Nicolas Anderbergani para Italpassion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Aunque ten\u00eda una distancia entre ejes casi id\u00e9ntica a la del Maserati 6CM, el 4CL ten\u00eda una v\u00eda 5 cm m\u00e1s ancha y era m\u00e1s bajo gracias al reposicionamiento de los soportes de los muelles de los amortiguadores. Este chasis tradicional estaba revestido con una carrocer\u00eda baja hecha de paneles de aleaci\u00f3n ligera, tambi\u00e9n fabricados por Maserati. Maserati tambi\u00e9n produjo una versi\u00f3n aerodin\u00e1mica del 4CL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Maserati 4CL durante el Gran Premio de M\u00f3naco Hist\u00f3rico 2026\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Exvebe3MUhc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Humillaci\u00f3n en Tr\u00edpoli, pero una posguerra feliz<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pilotada por Luigi Villoresi, la versi\u00f3n aerodin\u00e1mica del 4CL se hizo con la pole en su primera aparici\u00f3n en el Gran Premio de Tr\u00edpoli de 1939, en el circuito de Melhalla construido por los italianos en su colonia. Y s\u00ed, los alemanes hab\u00edan tenido tiempo de reaccionar a la decisi\u00f3n de los italianos de restringir el Gran Premio de Tr\u00edpoli a los coches peque\u00f1os, una forma indirecta de desbancar a las m\u00e1quinas alemanas. Mercedes desarroll\u00f3 este W165 en s\u00f3lo 7 meses, que era una especie de versi\u00f3n reducida del formidable W125.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante la carrera, dos de los tres Maserati inscritos tuvieron que retirarse por problemas de motor, por lo que el Mercedes-Benz gan\u00f3 la carrera. Sin embargo, la victoria lleg\u00f3 dos Grandes Premios m\u00e1s tarde, en el Gran Premio de N\u00e1poles, con el privado John Peter Wakefield al volante. Luigi Villoresi llev\u00f3 el 4CL a la victoria en la edici\u00f3n de 1940 de la Targa Florio. El 4CL fue uno de los mejores coches de finales de la d\u00e9cada de 1940, y Luigi Villoresi volvi\u00f3 a ganar el Gran Premio de Niza de 1946. A continuaci\u00f3n, el 4CL evolucion\u00f3 hasta convertirse en el 4CLT con la adopci\u00f3n de un chasis tubular y particip\u00f3 en las primeras temporadas del campeonato de F\u00f3rmula 1, pero Alfa Romeo y Ferrari le aventajaban en cuanto a prestaciones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A una curva de distancia.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La 4CL siempre est\u00e1 presente en las carreras hist\u00f3ricas. La Serie A1, santuario de los pioneros de antes de la guerra, depar\u00f3 un cruel final para Richard Bradley. El piloto brit\u00e1nico fue imperial al volante de su Maserati 4CL n\u00ba 30, que fue conducido en 1939-40 por Giovanni Rocco y luego por el franc\u00e9s Robert Mazaud en 1946, en el Gran Premio de Marsella entre otros. Bradley domin\u00f3 la carrera de principio a fin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En la \u00faltima vuelta, a la salida de la Rascasse y con la curva Anthony Nogu\u00e8s como \u00fanico obst\u00e1culo, estaba a punto de hacerse con la victoria cuando un problema mec\u00e1nico hizo que su moto se detuviera de repente. Fue una terrible decepci\u00f3n, que benefici\u00f3 a su perseguidor Patrick Blakeney-Edwards. Con su Frazer-Nash Monoplace n\u00ba 42, realiz\u00f3 el atraco del a\u00f1o.
