Esto es exactamente lo que ocurri\u00f3 en Australia a principios de los 80, cuando el empresario Paul Halstead, que hab\u00eda triunfado con el boom de los ordenadores, se junt\u00f3 con el ingeniero Barry Lock, que hab\u00eda trabajado con James Hunt durante sus a\u00f1os ganadores en McLaren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tras dar la espalda a la inform\u00e1tica, la empresa de ingenier\u00eda con sede en Halstead ya ten\u00eda un buen pie en el negocio del autom\u00f3vil, ya que era propietaria de un concesionario Alfa Romeo e importaba coches De Tomaso Pantera a Australia. Tambi\u00e9n exportaba motores Cleveland a Italia. El ingeniero de carreras Barry Lock ya trabajaba con Halstead en el dise\u00f1o de su Pantera, un coche de carreras que domin\u00f3 la serie GT, cuando se plante\u00f3 la idea de construir un supercoche local.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inspiraci\u00f3n a partir de un proyecto de Autodelta que naci\u00f3 muerto<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>En lugar de empezar desde cero, lo que habr\u00eda llevado mucho tiempo y habr\u00eda sido costoso, la pareja opt\u00f3 por dise\u00f1ar a partir de una plataforma existente, a saber, un Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint. El cup\u00e9 fastback de Giugiaro, que apareci\u00f3 en 1976, hab\u00eda sido objeto de un estudio de prototipo por parte de Autoldeta en 1982, el Sprint 6C, con vistas a una posible entrada en el Grupo B. El proyecto no lleg\u00f3 m\u00e1s lejos, pero Lock se inspir\u00f3 en \u00e9l. El chasis y la carrocer\u00eda del coche, que pronto recibir\u00eda el sobrenombre de \"Giocattolo\" (\"juguete\" en italiano), hac\u00edan un uso extensivo de la fibra de carbono y el Kevlar, materiales pr\u00e1cticamente desconocidos en aquella \u00e9poca. Los modelos proced\u00edan de Nueva Zelanda. Los motores del departamento de motores HSV de Holden fueron preparados por el especialista TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing), que se encargaba de los motores Holden para el Campeonato Australiano de Turismos. El equipo de Lock tambi\u00e9n a\u00f1adi\u00f3 un plenum personalizado y dos cuerpos de mariposa para hacer funcionar el motor de hierro fundido. La suspensi\u00f3n delantera sigue siendo la original, a excepci\u00f3n de los puntos de montaje revisados. El resultado fue un superdeportivo biplaza con motor central y 300 CV, decorado en azul oscuro, interior de cuero y asientos Recaro. A pesar de algunos peque\u00f1os lujos, como aire acondicionado y un sistema de audio de alta gama, pesaba s\u00f3lo 1.085 kg. Su velocidad m\u00e1xima declarada era de 260 km\/h, con un tiempo de 0 a 100 km\/h de 5 segundos. El Giocattolo se present\u00f3 en una jornada de prensa con el ex campe\u00f3n mundial de F1 Alan Jones, que bati\u00f3 el r\u00e9cord de vuelta en Lakeside. Incluso se engalan\u00f3 un Giocattolo con luces intermitentes y pegatinas de la polic\u00eda de Queensland, como reclamo publicitario para indicar que la polic\u00eda estaba considerando esta opci\u00f3n. El proyecto hab\u00eda tenido un buen comienzo, con el apoyo de Holden, pero los costes de producci\u00f3n se dispararon debido al uso de Kevlar y a los exorbitantes impuestos de importaci\u00f3n de las cajas de cambios ZF procedentes de Alemania. La financiaci\u00f3n gubernamental para un programa de producci\u00f3n a peque\u00f1a escala se retir\u00f3 en 1989, en medio de un desplome burs\u00e1til que se cobr\u00f3 un alto precio en el mercado de supercoches que se hab\u00eda disparado en la d\u00e9cada de 1980. Halstead se vio obligado a abandonar su visi\u00f3n de un supercoche australiano.
