The Italian unions immediately disputed this explanation, arguing that the real problem stemmed from a lack of orders. But on November 2, 2026, <strong>Stellantis has finally clarified the cause of its problems: a missing electronic component supplied by an outside parts supplier.<\/strong> And according to information from <em>Milano Finanza<\/em>, the supplier in question is none other than Marelli. This shortage now threatens two Italian plants\u2014and potentially a third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A single electronic component is causing problems for two Fiat models<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, there is the Italian media outlet <em>Askanews<\/em> which revealed the initial details provided by Stellantis. The automaker is facing a shortage of a component for the engine control unit of the N3 GSE three-cylinder engine, which is used, in particular, by <strong>the Fiat Pandina and the new Fiat 500 Hybrid<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few hours later, <em>Milano Finanza<\/em> identified the supplier in question: <strong>Marelli, the automotive parts supplier with a long-standing relationship with Fiat<\/strong>. More specifically, there is reportedly a shortage of a microchip that is essential to the operation of the engine control unit. However, Marelli is not believed to be directly responsible for this shortage. The supplier is reportedly experiencing its own supply issues with one of its partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mirafiori and Pomigliano Under Threat Through December<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consequences are already evident in Italian factories. In Mirafiori, where production of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/en\/cars\/fiat-500\/\">Fiat 500 hybrid<\/a> began in late 2025, <strong>The assembly lines will be shut down again from November 2 through 6<\/strong>, after a two-week hiatus in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Pomigliano d\u2019Arco, it is the Fiat Pandina that is bearing the brunt of this shortage. The situation is all the more problematic given that it involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.italpassion.fr\/en\/fiat\/the-grand-panda-and-the-500-are-reviving-fiat-in-europe-except-that-6-out-of-10-italians-still-prefer-the-old-panda\/\">the best-selling car in Italy<\/a> for the first nine months of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the difficulties could continue. Stellantis warns that <strong>Further production stoppages are possible in November and December<\/strong>, while alternative supply solutions are found. The repercussions could even extend to the Termoli plant, which is responsible for producing the engines used in both city cars. Fewer cars assembled also means fewer engines are needed. This plant has already been struggling for several years\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A very real shortage\u2014but were the unions completely wrong?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This revelation sheds new light on the accusations made yesterday by the Mirafiori unions. The FIOM believed that the shortage of materials was just an excuse and that Stellantis was primarily trying to cover up insufficient demand for the Fiat 500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stellantis has now confirmed the shortage of electronic components<\/strong>, but that does not necessarily mean that the unions' concerns are unfounded. At Mirafiori, questions about order volumes remain unanswered, even though the automaker has already scaled back its production targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The shortage is also beginning to weigh on sales<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consequences are no longer limited to the factories. Registrations of the Fiat Pandina have fallen by <strong>29 % in October compared to September<\/strong>. Across the Italian market as a whole, Stellantis saw a 5.5 % decline in its registrations in October, and as much as a 9.5 % decline when Leapmotor is excluded, while the market grew by 4.8 %. The group acknowledges that supply chain challenges have weighed on Fiat\u2019s sales volumes and market share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stellantis is now working with Marelli to resolve the issue and identify alternative sources of supply. But in the meantime, <strong>Two of Fiat's most important models still rely on a small microchip<\/strong>, with consequences that could last until the end of the year.
