After several years of staff cuts and cost-cutting measures, Stellantis<\/a> continues to shift its strategy. The group, led by Antonio Filosa, plans to invest 60 billion euros by 2030 to refresh its model lineup and has announced a new wave of engineering hires in Europe and the United States. This decision confirms the shift that began in early 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a long time, the motto at Stellantis was to do more with less. Under Carlos Tavares\u2019s leadership, cost-cutting measures notably resulted in a reduction in engineering staff. But since Antonio Filosa took over, the tone has changed radically. And hiring is on the rise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Bloomberg at the Paris Motor Show, Ned Curic, Stellantis\u2019s chief engineering and technology officer, confirmed that the automaker would continue to hire. \u00abThere\u2019s room for growth, so I\u2019m hiring,\u00bb he said, adding, \u00abThis year, we\u2019ll be hiring several hundred additional engineers at various sites in Europe and the United States.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These new hires are in addition to those already announced<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This announcement comes as no surprise to Italpassion readers. As early as February 2026<\/a>, we explained how Stellantis had acknowledged that it had gone too far with cost-cutting measures, particularly by eliminating engineering positions that were essential to the development of new vehicles. Since then, the group has announced the hiring of thousands of engineers, notably to improve the quality of its cars. In France, 700 engineering positions were planned, while in Italy, the research and development center in Turin also saw new hires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this policy continues to be a mixed bag. In April<\/a>, we reported that Stellantis was also planning to cut 650 engineering jobs in R\u00fcsselsheim, Germany. The group is therefore hiring while reorganizing its workforce across its various sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European workforce numbers remain below 2021 levels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our exclusive table tracking Stellantis\u2019 workforce helps illustrate the extent of the road ahead. In Europe, the automaker employed approximately 142,000 people in 2021, compared to 124,200 in 2025. This represents a decrease of 17,800 employees, or 12.5 %, over four years. In North America, the workforce fell from 89,000 to 80,200 employees over the same period. Conversely, the workforce grew significantly in South America, from 26,000 to 38,800 employees. These figures include all employees, not just engineers. Nevertheless, they illustrate the profound changes in the group\u2019s workforce since its founding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

60 billion euros to accelerate the development of cars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These new hires are part of a major investment program. Antonio Filosa plans to allocate approximately 60 billion euros by 2030 to model refreshes, manufacturing facilities, and technologies. In particular, Stellantis aims to accelerate the development of its STLA One multi-energy platform, while expanding its collaborations with Leapmotor. The goal is to design new vehicles in about two years, to keep pace with Chinese automakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Ned Curic emphasizes one point: Stellantis must retain its expertise in Europe, particularly in France, Italy, and Germany. This is a major challenge for Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, and Maserati, whose future also depends on the group\u2019s ability to develop its own technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After spending a long time trying to cut costs, Stellantis now seems to have realized that it will also need to invest in its people to revitalize its brands.
