After many months of rebuilding, thousands of euros spent, and a never-ending struggle just to get it started, Mat Armstrong thought he could finally enjoy his Ferrari 296 GTB<\/a> converted into a race car. We\u2019re heading to Germany, to the legendary N\u00fcrburgring, to put this Ferrari<\/a> a one-of-a-kind 820 HP. But as soon as he arrived at the track, the British YouTuber was in for an unpleasant surprise: his car was reportedly too loud to drive on the track!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Ferrari 296 That's Come a Long Way<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For nearly a year now, we\u2019ve been following the adventures of Mat Armstrong and his Ferrari 296 GTB. As a reminder, the British car enthusiast had purchased a severely damaged example before embarking on a particularly ambitious restoration project. Rather than simply restoring the supercar to its original condition, he decided to transform it with a genuine Ferrari 296 Challenge body kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A project that Ferrari hadn't really liked\u2014so much so that the automaker had ultimately blocked the purchase of certain parts<\/a>. And worst of all, after months of work, the car still wouldn't start. He had to spend nearly 20,000 \u20ac on a new hybrid battery, then enlist the help of the Ferrari network, only to discover that the real problem stemmed in part from a faulty start button built into the steering wheel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, this 296 is finally on the road. With its massive rear wing, race-spec aerodynamics, and modified exhaust, it looks more like a race car than a stock GTB. Mat Armstrong claims it produces 820 HP thanks to its twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine, which he hasn\u2019t even remapped yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An eight-hour drive just to be denied access to the racetrack<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For his first real track test, Mat Armstrong chose the N\u00fcrburgring. The trip didn\u2019t go exactly as planned: a few kilometers from his destination, the Ferrari ran out of fuel and displayed several error messages. Fortunately, it eventually started up again. But the next day, as he was about to enter the track, a track official stopped him. Two issues were causing problems: the rear wing, deemed too large under German regulations, and, more importantly, the exhaust, which was considered far too loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The track manager finally agrees to let him do a single lap, on the condition that he modify his exhaust afterward. Mat Armstrong then takes to the track and discovers a particularly impressive car. Acceleration, braking, handling: despite a few bumps and tires better suited for the road, the Ferrari seems to meet his expectations. But after that first lap, the verdict is in: it\u2019s impossible to continue with this setup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hybrid system gives him a second chance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Frustrated at having driven so many kilometers for just one lap, the British driver tried a rather clever tactic. Since his Ferrari has a plug-in hybrid powertrain, he returned to the track entrance using its silent mode. And against all odds, it worked! The officials let him go for a second lap, even though the exhaust hadn\u2019t actually been replaced. His satisfaction, however, was short-lived. The next day, as he was about to take one last lap, the Ferrari went into degraded mode and lost power. Back in the United Kingdom, Mat finally discovered that a hose in the turbocharger system had come loose. A mechanical failure far less serious than feared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This car takes on a special charm when you realize that Ferrari is reportedly working on a 296 Challenge Stradale<\/a>, which is set to be unveiled in a month. Mat Armstrong, for his part, already has his own take on it, with its 820 HP hybrid V6 and massive rear wing. And despite the many headaches he\u2019s encountered since buying it, the Brit has absolutely no regrets. After driving it around the N\u00fcrburgring, he even claims it\u2019s one of the best cars he\u2019s ever driven on a track. So much so that he\u2019s now adamant: he\u2019ll never sell this one-of-a-kind Ferrari!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
