He spent more than a decade at the museum Lamborghini<\/a> and has never seen the competition for which its design seems to have been intended. Twenty-three years after its unveiling, the spectacular 2003 Lamborghini Murci\u00e9lago R-GT prototype is now looking for a new owner. This is a particularly rare opportunity, as this one-of-a-kind example is being offered publicly for sale for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unveiled at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, this Murci\u00e9lago is not like other R-GTs. It is the original show car developed for Lamborghini, a car that was also used in the brand\u2019s official photographs. With its exposed carbon-fiber bodywork, massive rear wing, widened track, and rear-set cockpit, it already took the transformation of Luc Donckerwolke\u2019s Murci\u00e9lago design to the extreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\u2026 too extreme to hit the slopes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The R-GT was supposed to mark Lamborghini's return to international motorsports. At the time, the automaker was working with Reiter Engineering and Audi Sport to develop a Murci\u00e9lago<\/a> capable of competing, in particular, in the FIA GT Championship and the American Le Mans Series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the prototype on display in Frankfurt will never line up at the starting line of a race. According to Curated, which is now offering the car for sale, Lamborghini discovered during its certification by the Polo Storico department that this initial version had never even been driven. It was reportedly deemed \u00abtoo radical\u00bb under FIA regulations. Lamborghini, Reiter Engineering, and Audi Sport therefore continued developing the project, ultimately resulting in the true Murci\u00e9lago R-GT race car. As for the show car, it had already fulfilled its mission: to show the public what Sant\u2019Agata Bolognese\u2019s new weapon might look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than ten years at the Lamborghini Museum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Its career could have ended there. In fact, as early as 2004, the prototype was added to the Lamborghini Museum, where it remained on display until 2018. This history explains its unique condition: unlike the R-GTs entered in competition, this car did not accumulate race mileage, repairs, or technical upgrades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curated<\/em> says it then sent the car back to Sant\u2019Agata Bolognese to have it inspected and certified by Lamborghini Polo Storico. The American specialist describes it as a \u00abFactory One-Off Showcar,\u00bb with only one unit reportedly produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Lamborghini you probably won't see very often<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After a stint at the museum and several years off the open market, this Murci\u00e9lago R-GT is now being offered for sale by Curated. The price has not been disclosed; interested parties should contact the seller directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any case, it\u2019s hard to assign it the same value as a traditional Murci\u00e9lago. It\u2019s neither truly a road car nor a vintage race car, but rather a part of the program that would eventually give rise to the Murci\u00e9lago R-GT. And 23 years after Frankfurt, this Lamborghini prototype is stepping out of its role as a museum piece to be admired for the first time and becoming a car that people can actually buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
