A \u201cswap\u201d\u2014that is, replacing a car\u2019s engine\u2014is a very common practice in the United States. But the hardest part is standing out from the crowd rather than actually doing one, given the sheer number of modifications and how deeply rooted this culture is in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The phenomenon drag-and-drive<\/em> has profoundly changed the American drag racing scene.\u00a0 The concept is simple: competitors must drive on public roads between several racetracks before completing their timed runs there. The car must therefore combine two qualities that are usually at odds: it must be powerful enough to go fast on the track and reliable and comfortable enough to cover several hundred kilometers on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camaro Seagull, the \u201caffordable\u201d version of a drag racing monster<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Seagull project stems from the \u00abEagle\u00bb project, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro built by Cameron Johnson Race Cars (CJRC) for Cleetus McFarland. Based in Florida, CJRC specializes in building cars for American drag racing, with vehicles capable of producing several thousand horsepower. The 5,000-HP Eagle represents the extreme embodiment of this philosophy. But when Cameron Johnson decided to build his own 1969 Camaro, he specifically did not want to replicate the excesses of Cleetus\u2019s car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2024, CJRC unveiled the Seagull project, the \u00ablittle brother\u00bb of the Eagle, designed to be much less expensive and, above all, more practical.\u00a0The Seagull was intended to be a drag-and-drive car with 1,500 to 1,800 HP (yes, more reasonable\u2026), capable of road use and capable of running the quarter-mile in 8 seconds. \u00a0CJRC plans to include a 10- to 12-point roll cage, a leaf-spring rear suspension, rear wheels capable of accommodating tires approximately 12 inches wide, and even air conditioning. The goal is to achieve between 1,500 and 1,800 ch, while keeping the car civilized enough to be driven on public roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first version of the Seagull was much more conventional. Three engine options were considered at the time: a twin-turbo GM LS engine, a twin-turbo LT engine, or a twin-turbo Chevrolet big-block. Cameron even leaned toward the latter option, which was perfectly in line with American drag racing culture. For the professional-grade steel body of a \u201969 Camaro, they found one in Texas and then set to work ordering parts and creating a 3D scan. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So everything seems to follow a familiar formula: an old American muscle car, a big V8, two turbos, an automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive. But Cameron Johnson ultimately decides that this approach is too\u2026 ordinary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 2024: A Moment of Madness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He's changed his mind. So much for the American V8. Just one month after the Seagull was unveiled, the project has taken a radical turn. The Camaro Seagull will ultimately be equipped with a\u2026 V10 Lamborghini<\/a> ! The reason is simple: LS, LT, and big-block engines have become extremely common in drag-racing builds. A Lamborghini V10 installed in a 1969 Camaro, on the other hand, is a combination almost never seen before. But this is light-years away from typical American practices, as it involves choosing a much more specialized engine that wasn\u2019t designed at all for the technical architecture of American muscle cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cameron wants to be the first to design a car with a front-mounted Lamborghini V10 and an automatic transmission. This would obviously make European and Italian purists cringe, but Americans don\u2019t let \u201cheritage\u201d considerations get in their way. The V10 must be paired with two turbochargers to achieve the original power target, which is around 1,500 to 1,800 HP. The project ultimately becomes an engineering experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wedding of the Carp and the Rabbit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When CJRC installed the V10 in the Camaro\u2019s engine compartment, a problem immediately arose: the Lamborghini engine is very wide.\u00a0The layout of the V10 and its components conflicts with the front suspension, particularly the mounting points for the control arms and the steering system. The control arm mounting points must be relocated, the steering rack must be redesigned, and the engine mounts must be completely reengineered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chassis must be adapted to a mechanical system that was absolutely not designed for it.\u00a0Two mechanical worlds that should never have met must now merge: on one hand, a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, produced at a time when American muscle cars were based on relatively traditional mechanical architectures.\u00a0On the other, a Lamborghini V10, designed for modern Italian supercars and typically mounted in a mid-engine or rear-engine layout. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lamborghini V10 doesn\u2019t just have a completely different design; it also imposes its own constraints in terms of cooling, exhaust, fuel delivery, and electronic control\u2014not to mention the two turbochargers. Currently, the biggest challenge is getting the Lamborghini engine to work with an American automatic drag-racing transmission\u2014specifically, a competition-grade Powerglide with a heavy-duty housing.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the focus on power, CJRC plans to retain a leaf-spring rear suspension.\u00a0In a build designed to produce up to 1,800 HP, one might expect to see a sophisticated four-link suspension, a massive racing rear axle, and the usual array of features found in modern drag cars.\u00a0The project is intended to remain relatively simple and, above all, practical. This approach also explains why air conditioning was included in the initial specifications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cCamborghini\u201d is taking shape very slowly but surely<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After the V10 was announced, the project didn't remain just a concept. CJRC continued to work on integrating the powertrain and filming the various stages of production.
