Just three years ago, the path seemed all laid out. With The Lanzador concept, unveiled in 2023<\/a>, Lamborghini<\/a> was developing its first all-electric 100 % car, a four-seat GT billed to deliver more than 1,300 ch. But since then, the market has changed, and above all, customers in Sant\u2019Agata Bolognese have made their voices heard. Lamborghini has therefore made a radical decision: to abandon the 100 % electric engine and return to a plug-in hybrid configuration, more in line with the V8s and V12s that are the driving force behind the brand\u2019s success today. And according to Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini\u2019s CEO, customers have absolutely no regrets about this change in direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked during Monterey Car Week, Stephan Winkelmann addressed the transformation of the Lanzador project head-on: \u00abWe decided to switch the Lanzador from all-electric to a plug-in hybrid, and this has been very well received by customers. They\u2019re very happy with it,\u00bb the executive said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particularly interesting statement, coming a few months after his very cautious remarks on electric cars. Winkelmann had already explained that innovation wouldn't make any sense if customers aren't ready<\/a> and believed that a supercar brand was taking a \u00abbig risk\u00bb<\/a> by eliminating the vibrations, sound, and mechanical sensations that its customers continue to cherish. This time, Lamborghini is clearly getting concrete feedback: when it announced to its customers that its upcoming GT would not, after all, be electric, the reaction was positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lamborghini has already found its formula with V8 and V12 PHEVs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This shift obviously does not mean a return to purely internal-combustion-powered cars. Lamborghini is now fully committed to plug-in hybrids. The Revuelto<\/a> It thus combines its spectacular naturally aspirated V12 engine with electric motors, while the Temerario<\/a> combines a twin-turbo V8 capable of reaching 10,000 rpm with its hybrid system. The\u2019Urus<\/a> The SE also uses a hybrid twin-turbo V8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, Lamborghini isn\u2019t giving up on electrification. Instead, the brand is looking to use it to enhance its internal combustion engines rather than replace them. It is precisely this philosophy that should now guide the fourth model, expected around 2028<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What engine will power the future Lanzador?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One major unknown remains, however: Lamborghini has not yet revealed the final powertrain for this future plug-in hybrid GT. The Revuelto\u2019s electrified V12 or the Temerario\u2019s V8 might seem appealing, but integrating them into a four-seat GT would require a tailored architecture. Another possibility would be to use an upgraded version of the Urus SE\u2019s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine, which is particularly well-suited to a vehicle that is taller and more versatile than the brand\u2019s supercars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, nothing has been confirmed. One thing, however, is becoming increasingly clear: Lamborghini had envisioned that its next revolution would be an all-electric car. Its customers, it seems, prefer a different kind of revolution\u2014one in which electricity is still present but complements the sound and character of an internal combustion engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
