A year after the first rumors surfaced, the picture is becoming clearer. When Fiat<\/a> had presented the Grande Panda 4\u00d74 concept in May 2025<\/a>, many saw it primarily as a stylistic exercise designed to evoke nostalgia for the legendary 1980s Panda 4\u00d74. Yet behind the white rims, the burgundy paint, and the numerous nods to the original model, there was already a very serious technical foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time, we speculated that Fiat might adopt the system first introduced on the Jeep Avenger 4xe and later adapted for the Alfa Romeo Junior Q4. More than a year later, new reports coming out of Italy seem to confirm this direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An all-wheel-drive system without a driveshaft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming Fiat Grande Panda 4\u00d74 is not expected to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor. Gone is the driveshaft that mechanically connects the front and rear wheels. The Smart Car platform on which the Fiat Grande Panda<\/a> In fact, it was never designed to accommodate a conventional all-wheel-drive system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chosen solution would be much more modern. Up front, it would feature a 110-horsepower hybrid engine paired with a six-speed e-DCT automatic transmission. At the rear, a second electric motor would drive the rear wheels when traction conditions require it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This principle is now well established within Stellantis. The Jeep Avenger 4xe was the first to adopt it, followed by the\u2019Alfa Romeo Junior Q4<\/a>. In these models, the electronics control the activation of the rear motor to provide greater traction on slippery roads or rough terrain, without the limitations of a traditional mechanical system. When Fiat mentioned an \u00abinnovative electrified rear axle\u00bb during the concept\u2019s unveiling in 2025, all signs were already pointing in that direction. The latest information published in Italy only reinforces this hypothesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeep technology adapted to the Fiat world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, the question wasn\u2019t whether Fiat would use this technology, but rather when. The Fiat Grande Panda shares many technical components with other models in the Stellantis group. While the Smart Car platform officially differs from the CMP used by the Jeep Avenger and Alfa Romeo Junior, the technical links between these architectures have always suggested that adapting the electrified all-wheel-drive system would be relatively straightforward (unofficially, the Smart Car platform is said to be a low-cost platform derived from CMP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, don\u2019t expect to find the exact same 145-horsepower powertrain as in the Avenger 4xe and Junior Q4. Fiat is likely to opt for a more accessible configuration that prioritizes versatility over performance. The goal remains true to the spirit of the original Panda 4\u00d74: to offer a compact, affordable car capable of handling snow, country roads, or mountain roads without turning into an expensive SUV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success of the Grande Panda is a game-changer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When We interviewed Fiat executives in early 2025<\/a>, the message was clear: a Fiat Grande Panda 4\u00d74 could only be produced if the Grande Panda proved to be a genuine commercial success. At the time, nothing was certain. The model\u2019s European launch was still being hampered by production issues, and the first deliveries were proceeding slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation has changed dramatically since the beginning of 2026. With production back to normal, the Grande Panda is gradually emerging as the main driver of Fiat\u2019s recovery in Europe. Figures recorded between January and May 2026<\/a> show a particularly positive trend for this model, which is now driving much of the brand\u2019s growth in several European markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admittedly, a 4\u00d74 version will likely remain a niche offering in the overall product lineup. Most customers will continue to prefer the two-wheel-drive hybrid versions. But the success of the base model completely changes the economic equation. Fiat now has a large enough customer base to justify developing a more specialized variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May be available as early as 2027<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Officially, Fiat has not yet confirmed that the Grande Panda 4\u00d74 will go into production. According to the latest rumors, the production model could be unveiled sometime between late 2026 and 2027. The vehicle would retain its rugged look with increased ground clearance, specific body protection, and several features directly inspired by the concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The price is also expected to stay true to the Panda\u2019s philosophy. This upcoming 4\u00d74 version could remain under \u20ac25,000, making it one of the most affordable all-wheel-drive vehicles on the European market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
