In 1966, Alfa Romeo<\/a> presented at the Geneva Motor Show a roadster that was to become a legend: the Alfa Romeo Spider, better known by its nickname Duetto. Sixty years on, this Italian convertible remains for many the most elegant ever designed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1966, the year the automobile began to dream<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The mid-1960s marked a real break in automotive history. Cars gradually ceased to be purely rational and became emotional. In 1966, the automobile industry saw the birth of models that have become legendary, designed for a younger, freer, more daring generation. At Alfa Romeo, this revolution took the form of a sleek, light and sensual spider. The Duetto arrives in a favorable context. The Giulia saloon and its derivatives were a huge success, and Alfa Romeo wanted to complete its range with a modern roadster capable of seducing both the European and American markets. Battista Pininfarina's latest masterpiece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Alfa Romeo entrusted the project to Pininfarina. The design was supervised by Battista \"Pinin\" Farina himself, assisted by Aldo Brovarone and Franco Martinengo. The stylistic filiation is clear: the Duetto is directly inspired by the Superflow prototypes developed at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, in particular the Superflow IV with its rounded rump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is a body of exceptional purity. Ironically, this Alfa Romeo Spider was the last car personally followed by Battista Pininfarina, who died just a few weeks after its official presentation, on March 10, 1966. An almost testamentary dimension that still contributes to the model's mythology today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beneath its timeless elegance, the Duetto is based on the Giulia platform, whose wheelbase has been shortened to 2.25 meters. The engine matches the design: a 1.6-liter aluminum four-cylinder with twin camshafts, developing 109 horsepower. A respectable figure for the time, especially considering the car's contained weight: just 990 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the road, the Duetto is an instant hit. Lively, well-balanced and agile, it's just as pleasing for sporty driving as it is for hair-raising strolls. Its rear-wheel drive, four disc brakes and five-speed manual gearbox make it a true connoisseur's roadster. Capable of reaching speeds of between 185 and 200 km\/h, depending on version, it proves that elegance and performance are not mutually exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Duetto\", a name born of a contest... and a lawsuit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The name \"Duetto\" did not emerge from the marketing offices. At the time, Alfa Romeo organized a major competition entitled \"Spider 1600: give it a name. It will become famous\". Over 140,000 entries were received from all over Europe. The jury, chaired by the poet Leonardo Sinisgalli, chose the name \"Duetto\", meant to symbolize the harmony between grace and strength, but also the idea of pleasure shared by two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The winner, Guidobaldo Trionfi, received his white Spider in June 1966 from Alfa Romeo president Giuseppe Luraghi. However, the story soon took an unexpected turn: a famous Italian confectionery company claimed exclusive rights to the name \"Duetto\". The courts agreed. Officially, the name disappeared after only a few hundred copies had been sold. But in everyday language, the damage was done. For the public, this Alfa Romeo will forever be known as \"the Duetto\", and all subsequent generations of Spiders will inherit this mythical nickname.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hollywood, Cannes and the Golden Gate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the Duetto has become a global icon, it's not just because of its design. Alfa Romeo orchestrated a communication campaign as audacious as it was refined. Even before its American launch, three Spiders - one green, one white and one red - crossed the Atlantic aboard the liner Raffaello, accompanied by the European jet set. A lottery organized during the cruise even allowed a guest to drive one of them away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In all, over 124,000 examples were produced, a remarkable figure for such a distinctive roadster.
