Italpassion usually talks about the Italian car industry, new products, sales figures or models still under wraps. Rarely about human drama. However, some events go beyond the boundaries of a simple news item. The brutal disappearance of Vince Zampella is one of them. Because it involved a Ferrari. Because it was the most violent reminder yet that an open road is not a racetrack. And because, in a fraction of a second, you can become a passenger in your own car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An extremely violent accident on a notoriously dangerous road<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, December 21, shortly after 12:45 p.m., a Ferrari 296 GTS traveling on the Angeles Crest Highway, north of Los Angeles, went off the road for as yet unknown reasons. The car struck a concrete barrier before bursting into flames. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver was trapped in the passenger compartment, while a passenger was ejected on impact. Both occupants died of their injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road, much loved by driving enthusiasts for its winding route through the San Gabriel mountains, is also notoriously dangerous. On this particular day, no other cars were involved. The accident was filmed by witnesses, and videos quickly circulated on social networks. The one we're sharing on Instagram is deliberately cropped. Other images, released earlier in the day, unfortunately showed the lifeless bodies. They are obviously not intended to be relayed. The vehicle involved is a Ferrari 296 GTS, a mid-engined hybrid model developing over 800 horsepower. An exceptional supercar, capable of extraordinary performance... but which, on the open road, remains subject to the same laws of physics as any other car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
