For several decades, the large luxury sedan has been the snake in the sea ofAlfa Romeo.<\/a> A project often talked about, sometimes sketched out, but never realized. And yet, on several occasions, the dream seemed within reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ghost of Project 961<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Back in FCA's day, a large E-segment sedan, code-named 961, was on the production drawing-board. The first mules were even caught testing: a Maserati Ghibli body, grafted with a camouflaged front end inspired by the Giulia. Enough to feed the fantasies of alfists. But the project quickly fell through. Disappointing sales of the Giulia and Stelvio prevented the brand from justifying such a move upmarket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A glimmer of light from Stellantis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Stellantis was born, the dream resurfaced. A large luxury sedan, codenamed A7S, would have been in the works around 2022-2023. But again, radio silence since then. Priorities have changed, and the strategy has tightened around SUVs and a more accessible range: Junior, restyled Tonale, another SUV between Tonale and Stelvio, new Stelvio, Giulia and a future compact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When designers take over<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the face of this absence, it's the independent designers who keep the fantasy alive. A few months ago, Alessandro Masera delivered his vision a large Alfa Romeo sedan inspired by the Junior and the Maserati Granturismo<\/a>. A sporty, elegant, almost realistic silhouette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, it's the Instagram account cool.car.design that's fueling the dreams. And this time, the proposal takes us back to the FCA era. The exercise imagines an Alfa Romeo limousine seemingly built on a Mercedes S-Class base, with a front end inherited from the Giulia. Nearly 5 meters long, based on a hypothetical Giorgio platform, it would house a 3.0 V6 hybrid engine under the hood. A cocktail that could have offered Alfa Romeo a technological and luxurious showcase, capable of rivaling German or Japanese references.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between nostalgia and reality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, all this is pure fantasy. As the current product plan reminds us, no large sedan is planned for Alfa Romeo in the next few years. Priorities lie elsewhere: consolidating the range with SUVs and a compact car, to ensure the brand's long-term future. For more ambitious projects, such as a luxury sedan, coup\u00e9 or spider, we'll probably have to wait until the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
