Alfa Romeo<\/a> is currently preparing two highly-anticipated models: the Stelvio and the Giulia, whose electric versions will be launched in 2025 and 2026 respectively. <\/strong>But just as the brand was moving towards an all-electric range, it has been confirmed several months ago by management that hybrid engines<\/a> will complete the range. While the 100 % electric version will take priority, hybrid-thermal variants will be offered at a later date, and the 100 % electric version will be offered at a later date. it seems that the 1.6L hybrid engine is the one that could power them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confirmation of the 1.6L EP6 PHEV engine in future Alfa Romeo models<\/strong> seems only a matter of time. This engine, which was recently confirmed as being in production at the Szentgotth\u00e1rd plant in Hungary<\/a>could be the key to future Stelvio and Giulia models. If we still had doubt between the 2.0L GME and 1.6L EP6 engines<\/a>one particularly interesting piece of information comes from the United States: a prototype of the Jeep Cherokee, a D-segment SUV based on the STLA Large platform, was spotted.<\/strong> Scheduled for launch in 2025, this model will feature the 1.6L hybrid engine, a decision confirmed by Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa at the 2024 Los Angeles Auto Show. This new engine is produced at the Dundee plant in Michigan<\/a>following a significant investment of $83 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that this engine is deployed in a D-segment SUV comparable to the Stelvio, based on the STLA Large platform is no mean feat. <\/strong>It's becoming highly likely that this engine, already in production in Europe, will also be used for Alfa Romeo's future European models, such as the Stelvio and Giulia. While hybrid production of the Jeep Cherokee and the 1.6L hybrid seem to be confirmed, it's becoming increasingly difficult to imagine the GME 2.0L engine being retained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1.6L PHEV engine therefore seems to be the obvious solution chosen by Stellantis for future Alfa Romeo vehicles.<\/strong> This new Cherokee, positioned between the Compass and Grand Cherokee in the Jeep range, will be worth keeping an eye on. What power will the 1.6L offer? With which transmission?<\/strong> The 195 hp of the Peugeot e3008 seems too light, and as far as we know, there is no production of an eDCT gearbox in the USA. To conclude, production of the 1.6L was due to start in 2024 at the Dundee plant, but has been postponed to early 2025.
